Greetings from Hickory Corner!
There is so much going on in our world today. The year 2020 will definitely be one for the history books.
Speaking of history, let us go back to June 6, 1944. June 6 marks the 76th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Normandy when allied forces began the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi Germany’s control. It is one of the most significant battles in our nation’s history and one of the most crucial battles of World War II. The 1944 Normandy invasion changed the world in ways that still matter today. Due to unprecedented events, this year the celebration to honor and remember those who served in the Allied invasion of Normandy will be a virtual online event. Here are powerful quotes from that day:
“Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade…the eyes of the world are upon you.” – General Dwight Eisenhower (letter to troops)
“They fight not for the lust of conquest. They fight to end conquest. They fight to liberate.” – President Franklin D. Roosevelt (official address announcing the invasion)
“You get your *** on the beach. I’ll be there waiting for you, and I’ll tell you what to do. There ain’t anything in this plan that is going to go right.” – Colonel Paul R. Goode (pre-attack briefing)
Now, let us go back to Sept. 16, 1938 and see what the price of groceries cost.
Recently, while going through a box of old papers, I found an old full size newspaper ad dated 1938 for a Red and White Market. Almost all the items in the ad were the Red and White brand. I do not recall this store or where I got this paper from. The location in the ad only shows Columbus. Does anyone know anything about this market? Here are some of the items listed in the ad: Spry – 21 cents, Cornflakes – two for 15 cents, one pound coffee – 27 cents, quick cook oats – 17 cents, round steak – 25 cents and bread – 10 cents. Wow, a lot has changed over 80 years…you sure could buy a lot with one dollar!
Reminder: membership dues to the Hickory Corner Community Center were due in May. If you have not renewed your membership, please mail your dues to Sarah Holmes at 720 Holmes Rd, Henderson, TN 38334. We have a wonderful center, and it is great place to fellowship with friends and neighbors.
I have company again! My son Terry rang my doorbell and surprised me Friday. We have been busy pulling out bushes and doing some new landscaping around my patio. I always love visits with my kids.
Our community sends thoughts and prayers to those who have lost loved ones, especially to the Jessie Lee Thomas family and the Yondell Geary Family. Also, remember in prayer Arlan Porter, Walt and Ann Bennett, Richy Butler, Ronnie and Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Mary Alice and Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Jim Ruth, W.T Roland, Peggy Lard, William Maness and Buck Burkhead.
