Greetings from Hickory Corner!
Just a reminder: There is a meeting scheduled at the HCCC at 7 p.m. this Thursday, June 25. All members are encouraged to attend as there will be an election of new officers. Social distancing will take place. Also, if you have not paid your annual membership dues, you can pay at the meeting or mail them to Sarah Holmes at 720 Holmes Rd., Henderson TN 38334.
Covid-19 has certainly changed how we greet each other. It seems we have had to say goodbye to hugs, and the most popular greeting, handshakes (an ancient Greece custom), are out the window for now. “I don’t think we should ever shake hands ever again, to be honest with you,” Dr Anthony Fauci, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, said back in April (Time Magazine). I heard on the news tonight where the virus is increasing in many states. It appears Tennessee is seeing an increase. Although Chester County has not had a lot of cases, we must stay careful, and, folks, we have to take this seriously. If you wear a mask or do not wear one, it sends a message of how seriously you take public health warnings, and we have been warned. I will continue to wear my mask, practice social distancing and pray that we will see an end to this soon.
My son Greg and his wife Janice were here visiting last week. As always, when my kids visit, I get quite a bit of help around the house and yard, but most of all, I just enjoy spending time with them. We grabbed burgers from Bell’s one day and had us a picnic at Chickasaw and then walked across the bridge. Another day, we went to Lexington for barbecue and took our sandwiches to Beech Lake for another picnic.
Congratulations to Ben and Crystal Rowsey on the birth of their daughter, Maggie Rae, born on Father’s Day, June 21. What a precious Father’s Day gift for daddy! Maggie has a big brother, Milo, age two, who welcomed her home. Grandparents are Stacy and Doddie Clayton and Bob and Becky Rowsey of Henderson. Great-grandparents are JoAnn Clayton and the late Geney Clayton and JoAnn Harville and the late Ray Harville.
I received a call from my niece, Donna McAllister, in Illinois telling me she was a great-aunt as her nephew Michael and his wife are now proud parents of a baby girl, Skylar Lynn Patterson. Grandfather is Nick Patterson of Pekin, Ill., and great-grandparents are the late Charles Patterson and the late Doris Hemby Patterson. Charles was born and raised in Hickory Corner.
Let us see what the price of groceries were in January 1966 at the JW Patterson and Walker Grocery in Jacks Creek: Tennessee Pride whole pork sausage 59 cents per pound, Kraft Miracle Whip (quart) 49 cents, Pet Milk 13 ounces seven for $1, Florida Gold frozen orange juice three for 99 cents and Hunts tomato sauce three for 35 cents. JW Patterson later opened Patterson Grocery on Main Street in Henderson. Thank you, JW, for calling and sharing this information.
Remember in prayer Arlan Porter, Walt and Ann Bennett, Richy Butler, Ronnie and Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Mary Alice and Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Jim Ruth, W.T Roland, Peggy Lard and Buck Burkhead. If you would like to add or remove a name from our prayer list, please call.
