Edna Newman Obituary – May 27, 1933 – July 13, 2020


Edna Faye Newman, 87, of Green Cove Springs, Fla., passed away peacefully on July 13, 2020.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1, at Shackelford Funeral Directors of Henderson – Crook Avenue Chapel with Jerry Gillim officiating.
The family will receive friends at Crook Avenue beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Center Hill Wright Road, Reagan, TN 38368.
Born to the late Richard Oliver and Mary Feddye Washburn Gilliam on May 27, 1933 in Henderson, she graduated from Chester County High School in 1951.
She married John Paul Newman of Jacks Creek in 1954, becoming a Navy wife. They moved several times over the years, landing in Orange Park, Fla., in the early 1970s and finally settling in Green Cove Springs in 1980.
She was a member of Hibernia Baptist Church in Fleming Island, Fla.
She dedicated her life to her family and loved spending time outdoors in nature, working in her yard and tending her flowers.
She also enjoyed going to church and Bible study, sewing and spending time with friends. She was always known to have peppermints somewhere nearby and had a special place in her heart for animals.
She is survived by one loving daughter, JoAnna (Daron) Willams of Opelika, Ala.; two grandsons, Alexander and Andrew; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Paul Newman; and four brothers and four sisters, Mary Jewell Hearn, Harrod Percy Gilliam, Opal Inez Gilliam, Addie Vernell Barham, Richard Oliver Gilliam, Jr., Benny Jessie Gilliam, Mildred Lucille Morris and Joe Dennis Gilliam all of Tennessee.
