Greetings from Hickory Corner!
This past Sunday was National Peanut Day. When I think of peanuts, I think of our 39th President, Jimmy Carter (1977-1981). Carter was born in Plains, Ga., in 1924. After serving in the Navy, he returned home to work in his family’s peanut growing business. After his presidency he established the Carter Center in Atlanta to promote human rights. He also is very active in Habitat for Humanity, building houses for those in need. You may recall last year, at the age of 95, Carter fell and required 14 stitches in his head but still went to Nashville to actually work on building houses. Jimmy Carter is a good man. Now back to National Peanut Day. I celebrated the day with some peanut butter on crackers. Years ago, I recall watching people put peanuts in their bottle of Coca-Cola. Want to try it? Snip the corner off a packet of salted peanuts and pour some into your Coca-Cola.
September’s official birth flower is the aster, which is said to represent both love and daintiness, and the birthstone is the sapphire which is a rich blue color. Happy Belated birthday to Nancy Holmes (9/1), Janice Weaver (9/5) and Joyce Clayton (9/6). Happy upcoming birthday to Bonice Martin (9/19). May all your wishes come true!
Walt and Ann Bennett have their son Barry visiting from Columbia, Mo. I know they enjoy having him here.
My son Terry and his wife Jo visited last week. As always, they were busy taking care of things around here for me as well as at their place. We had a chance to go to Lexington for barbecue and had a picnic at Beech Lake. It was nice to get out and about. I am always happy to have my kids visit.
We live in a fast-changing world. 2020 has been a tough year for all of us. Not only are we dealing with COVID-19, which has changed our normal routines and has resulted in almost 200,000 deaths, but now our country is dealing with wildfires and hurricanes. I saw on the news that smoke from the California wildfires have travelled as far as upstate New York. As I write this, a hurricane is headed to the gulf coast. We need to continue to pray and ask God to heal our country.
Remember in prayer Arlan Porter, Walt and Ann Bennett, Richy Butler, Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Mary Alice and Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Jim Ruth, W.T. Roland, Peggy Lard, Earl Clayton, Charles Beacham and Ray Hinson. Also, pray for our country. If you would like to add or remove a name to our prayer list, please call me.
If you would like to rent the HCC center for your special event, please call Nancy Patterson at 608-1159. Please call me at 989-3315 with any news and tidbits. It is difficult to write this column without the help of the readers. If you enjoy reading the Hickory Corner News, you need to call me with some news. Make it a great week!
