News from the Montezuma Community of Chester County

with Gayle Cox

I do apologize for not getting my article in last week. When we deal with a holiday along with my work schedule, I definitely get off track, and I just simply missed the early deadline.
My how time is flying. School is already half way through the first semester. I am sure the teachers and students will all be looking forward to a break before long.
With so much unrest in our country, I pray that each of you believers will be praying continually for the situation, our government and salvation for the lost.
Montezuma sends out happy belated birthday wishes to Dot Smith on Sept. 13 and Toby Connor on Sept. 15. Montezuma sends out happy birthday wishes to Rita Weaver on Sept. 17, Roger Crouse on Sept. 18, Steve Morrison on Sept. 20 and Kaitlyn Colbert on Sept. 23.
I received a phone call this week from Mr. J.W. Garner. We had a very interesting conversation. He and his wonderful wife Audrey will be celebrating their 67th anniversary on Sept. 30. They are both 94 years old. Mr. Garner was born and raised in the Montezuma Community, living on a dirt road in a house with 15 siblings and his parents. They had a wood cook stove, no phones and no television. Our children of today have a hard time understanding all of this. We are definitely a spoiled society with many luxuries that are taken for granted. Mr. Garner has six brothers and sisters that are still living. He was drafted in 1944 and served in World War II and later in the Korean War as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army. Mrs. Audrey was born in Commerce, Mo. She worked as a bookkeeper for over 50 years. They now reside in Lutheran Village in the Raleigh area of Memphis enjoying life with family and friends. What a sweet couple they are, and they have many stories to tell.
Please continue to pray for those dealing with COVID-19, Vicki Rush, Charles Beacham, Kristen Daniel, Linda Tacker, Faye Crouse, Nancy Thomas, Ed and Betty Morris, Ann Morrison, our country and our government. We especially want to remember the families of Colt Anthony Plunk, Jim Steed, Christy Lynn Phillips, William “Bill” Hurst, H.C. Cummings, Broderick Beecham, Pat Webber and Glenda Smith Rogers and other families that have recently lost loved ones.
Please call Betty Cooper at 879-9078 to book the use of the community center.
