Greetings from Hickory Corner!
Monday was a really cold day with some snow flurries. The cardinals must like snow as there were many hanging around my bird feeders. I sure love watching them.
I received a phone call from Mrs. Eunice Rouse Massengill who lives in Ocala, Fla. We enjoyed chatting and sharing tidbits. She shared memories of growing up in Chester County and chatted about Wilson, Harmony and Old Friendship schools. Eunice graduated from Chester County High School in 1943 remembering classmates, Fentress Casey, Martha Bell Reed, and Doyle Armour. Kin folks were the Mayfields, Rouses and Massengills. (Precious memories how they linger, how they ever flood my soul). Her father, Mr. Will Rouse and mother Matha are buried at Estes Cemetery. What a wonderful lady at the age of 96 sharing her memories of growing up. Mrs. Eunice reads the Chester County Independent and is looking forward to receiving the pet calendar. Many of you may remember her brother, the late Mr. Gravice Rouse, as he attended several events at our HCC Center. I look forward to chatting with her again.
Martin Luther King, Jr., Day will be celebrated Monday, Jan. 18. It is a day set aside to honor his life and legacy. King believed in non-violent protest in order to advance civil rights and social justice. Did you know that Martin Luther King, Jr. skipped two grades in high school, ninth and 11th, and entered Morehouse college at the age of 15 in 1944? Here are two quotes of his that I think fits his movement just perfectly: “I have decided to stick with love, hate is too great a burden to bear,” and, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Let us spread love. Chester County schools are out on Jan. 18, and I hope all the students are aware of why this holiday exists.
Happy Birthday wishes go out to Faye Morrison, 1/14; Anita Wade, 1/15; Joe Holmes, 1/20; Betty Cooper, 1/21; and John Cranford, 1/24. May your day be extra special.
Remember in prayer: Arlan Porter, Ann Bennett, Richy Butler, Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Jim Ruth, W.T. Roland, Peggy Lard and William and Eddie Luttrell. Please continue to pray for those who are dealing with COVID and other sicknesses. Sympathy to all those who have recently lost loved ones. Also, please continue to pray for our country.
