Freed-Hardeman University is in the midst of laying turf on the FHU Baseball Field.
This is just one of many other projects the university plans to get accomplished this summer. Other major plans include improving the softball and soccer fields to reduce drainage issues.
All of the projects in total are around $1.5 million according to FHU Athletic Director Mike McCutchen.
Both he and FHU Head Baseball Coach Jonathan Estes are really looking forward to having a turf field.
“We’ve been thinking and dreaming about this for years,” Estes said.
An example is being able to play more games each season since they will not have to worry about having games rained out or having to travel to places as far as Corinth or USJ for games due to rain when they were supposed to be at FHU.
“We’ve had three years of record-breaking rain in January and February, and we’re not going to have to worry about that anymore,” Estes said. “I think its going to really impact our player development.”
“We’ll be able to host a lot of events here that we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise,” McCutchen said.
Additionally, it will make preparations before games easier.
“That’ll be a big help for us,” McCutchen said.
