Chester County Retired Teachers announce scholarship winners


Chester County Retired Teachers met June 16 at Snookum’s.
President Jean Smith welcomed everyone, thanked The Peoples Bank for sponsoring the meal and recognized bank representatives Seth Anthony and Hayley O’Neal. She also thanked Brandon Maness and his crew for preparing the meal. Special guests were Keith and Janice Brown.
Jean Marilyn Hogan lead the Pledge of Allegiance, and Nancy Connor gave the thought for the day.
Dr. Ronald Johnson said grace before a delicious meal of salad, grilled chicken, baked potato and Texas Toast.
Jane Rowlett announced scholarship winners: Maelyn Stout and Austin Vest.
Maelyn was unable to attend but stated in her application that she plans to attend Jackson State Community College and become a teacher to not only teach academics but also to impact young lives. Austin was present, accompanied by his mother Julie Vest. He spoke to us about his plans to attend the University of Tennessee at Martin and become a teacher because he wants to make a positive change in the world.
We were pleased to have Jean Marilyn Hogan with us, as she will be moving to North Carolina with her daughter Ann.
We were sorry to announce the passing of Don Bryant on Monday, June 14.
Vice President Martha Lewis introduced our speaker Mike Barker who serves on the Board of Trustees of TCRS (Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System). As always Mike gave an informative, interesting, and assuring talk. He keeps us informed about our pensions!
Marti McDaniel gave the minutes of the last meeting. They were approved as read. Jennie Fletcher gave the treasurer’s report, which was also approved as read.
There was no old business.
In new business, Brianne Locke Matheney Chester County High School English teacher, was recognized as a finalist for Tennessee Teacher of the Year. Soccer teams and tennis teams were recognized.
For June’s service project, donations were made to Imagination Library. September service project will be a $10 donation from each member to go toward school supplies. Nancy Lofton will oversee the project.
We were asked to be thinking about an outing for later in the summer.
There was a drawing for door prizes, and the meeting adjourned.
