The Davidson-Haltom American Legion Post 157 Auxiliary Unit will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at the Chester County Senior Center, 247 East Main St., in Henderson. Applications are being accepted for charter members.
Those interested in joining and who meet the qualifications listed below are invited to attend and learn more.
At least 10 eligible adult members, in good standing, are needed to get the charter process started. Organizers hope to submit the application in November.
Qualification requirements for membership are as follow:

  • Grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of members of The American Legion; and
  • grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of all men and women who served in either of the following periods: April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918, and any time after Dec. 7, 1941, who being a citizen of the United States at the time of their entry therein served on active duty in the Armed Forces of any of the governments associated with the United States during either eligibility periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge;
  • grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of all men and women who were in the Armed Forces of the United Sates during either of the following periods: April 6, 1917, to Nov. 11, 1918; and any time after Dec. 7, 1941, who served on active duty in the Armed Forces of the United States during either eligibility periods and died in the line of duty or after honorable discharge; and
  • to those women who of their own right are eligible for membership in The American Legion.
    Anyone who thinks they may qualify are encouraged to attend. Those who do not currently have a family member in the American Legion may still qualify through a historical ancestor or deceased family member who served during the qualifying dates. Male spouses are also eligible.
    “The American Legion Auxiliary is not just a social club,” said Auxiliary President Mary Dunbar. The club is an active civic organization, rich with opportunities for community involvement and service. The Auxiliary is connected to the American Legion but has its own set of goals and agenda for service within the local community.
    Areas of service for the American Legion Auxiliary include children/youth, veterans and their families, local national guard and military service projects, assisting veterans/families in retirement homes and more. The Auxiliary also sponsors the annual Girls State program.
    In addition to reestablishing the Auxiliary in Chester County, there is potential for a local Junior Auxiliary for children, as well as service opportunities with the American Legion itself.
