The Tennessee Highway Patrol has opened applications for the next class of THP cadets. Those interested in being a part of the August 2024 THP Academy must apply by April 16.
Having recently implemented several incentives for new recruits. The THP offers impressive compensation, according to Sgt. Charles Childers, one rivaled by no other agency. THP employees now earn $31/hour ($65,000 annually) upon completion of the academy, with lateral transfers earning more. Those assigned to Shelby County earn an additional $10,000 annually.
The THP has openings across the state and is accepting both new and lateral hires. Incentives for those already working in law enforcement include higher pay and a shorter academy. Regular cadets will spend 17 weeks in the Academy at Donelson while lateral cadets will spend just 11 weeks prior to being released for field training.
The academy is challenging but attainable, Childers said. “It will prepare you for what life would be like for a Tennessee Trooper.” The hard work at the academy serves as training for the work ahead, but also shows the graduating cadets what they are made of. “We feel like we’re the best,” Childers added.
While many immediately think of state troopers, the THP has many more shoes to fill, including but not limited to: Special Operations, K-9, motorcycles, state capital protection, executive protection (Governor and family, etc.,), criminal investigations division, pupil transportation (inspections of school, church bus, etc.,), commercial vehicle enforcement unit, aviation and training division. In addition, Tennessee partners with many federal agencies/task forces such as FBI, DEA, etc.
Applicants should be 21 years old and should have a high school diploma and valid drivers license. Go to www.jointhp.com to apply. Apply by April 16 for the August 2024 academy.
