Finishing their run in “The Show,” the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions used a 24-point third quarter to keep their perfect start going, leading them to a 74-51 victory over the Washington (Md.) Adventist University Shock.
The Lady Lions (8-0, 3-0 MSC) started out the game with Rachel Satterly’s layup at 9:23 giving FHU a lead they would maintain across all 40 minutes. Kelsey Bender bucketed six of her 19 points – a young career’s high – by the end of the quarter. The WAU Shock stayed right with the Lady Lions, using three 3-pointers to answer each FHU score. One of those long balls tied the game to end the first quarter tied up at 16-16.
FHU’s defense clamped down in the second quarter, only allowing four scores from Washington Adventist (3-3, 1-0 CAC). While the Shock had trouble finding the hoop, the Lady Lions had three different players score buckets from deep, with KJ White, Kalea Fleming, and Satterly all draining 3-pointers. Rees Berkey had a strong second quarter at the boards, pulling down four rebounds to help FHU have an eight-point lead at intermission 34-26.
While the game stayed close across the first two quarters, it was a huge third quarter that separated the Lady Lions and the Shock. After WAU scored three quick points to start the quarter, Satterly rattled off the first nine points of a 15-0 run for the girls in maroon. Meanwhile, the WAU shooters went ice cold, missing eight straight attempts from the floor. Satterly, White, and Taryn Kile would score the final five FHU points of the quarter from the free-throw line, putting the Lady Lions ahead 58-34.
The first five minutes of the final quarter was the Bender and Satterly show with the freshmen scoring all 12 of the Lady Lions’ points from the start until the 2:26 mark when Fleming bucketed a layup. FHU ended their scoring with Julieth Rivera Morales tallying a jumper to cement the final score at 74-51.
For the seventh time in eight games, Rachel Satterly led the FHU offense with a 23-point night. Kelsey Bender went 8-for-11 from the floor to help tally 19 points, while KJ White added 11 points to the team total. Satterly joined Raegan Purvine for the team lead of four assists, and Bender pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Up Next – The Lady Lions return to Mid-South Conference play with a tough test against the No. 3 Campbellsville (Ky.) University Lady Tigers. Both the Lady Lions and the Lady Tigers enter the competition undefeated, with CU currently sitting at 5-0, with a 3-0 mark in MSC play. Tipoff from Campbellsville’s Powell Athletic Center is set for 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 1.
