CAROLYN POTTER Obituary – Dec. 13, 1935 – Dec. 26, 2019

Carolyn Jean Cable Potter, 84, of Luray passed away Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 at her home near Jacks Creek. Funeral services were 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue with Glenn Harris, Ricky Wilkerson and Brett Potter officiating. Burial followed in Unity Cemetery. The family received friends at Crook Avenue from 4-8 p.m. Sunday.
She was born Dec. 13, 1935 in Swain County, N.C., and grew up in Maryville, the daughter of the late Ellis Lawson and Oma Eliza Sizemore Cable. She graduated from Everett High School at Maryville and did a year of nursing at Charity School of Nursing in Knoxville and also at Blount County Memorial Hospital Nursing School in Maryville.
She married John Potter. They moved to Chester County in 1960. Mr. Potter served 42 and a half years in the military. She worked with special needs children for 15 years in the Chester County School System. She was a member of the Middlefork Road Baptist Church and was a Sunday School Teacher and Bible School Teacher for 45 years.
She was very involved in helping needy children and families and was a godmother to numerous children. She had received numerous awards for her humanitarian service, including the Apple Award from the Governor’s Office and Chester County Hero among many others.
She was affectionately known as Mom, Mother, Nanny, Meme, Mom Potter and Mea Maw.  
She is survived by a son, Blake Potter of Jackson; two daughters, Cindy (Henry) Haman of Luray and Ginger Potter of Henderson; a goddaughter, Judy Hale of Jackson; four grandchildren, Brett Potter, Summar Jahnkow, Matthew Jahnkow and Taylor Stovall; and a great-grandchild, Ember Jahnkow.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Potter, Sept. 22, 2008; and a brother, Hugh Cable.
