The Western Region 4-H Horse Bowl and Hippology contest took place in Crockett County on Saturday, January 11. Chester County 4-H was well represented by 7 students, 1 from CCMS, 4 from CCJHS, and 2 from CCHS.
This year’s contest had approximately 100 participants from the 31 counties that make up the Western Region. Horse Bowl is a team competition game contest made up of 3-4 person teams that test the knowledge of a variety of topics in the horse industry. Hippology is an all-around contest which encompasses a written test, slide identification, and horse judging to test the equine nutrition, management industry, and health knowledge of all the contestants.
Practice started back in early December for all of these kids. This was the first year for most of them to compete in this contest. They all worked hard and did an amazing job against some very tough competition. I am very proud of this group of students. This experience will help tremendously with our next contest in April, the Western Region 4-H Horse Judging Contest.
Thanks to all of the families that allowed their child to participate, your support is appreciated.
I also would like to say thank you to our 4- H program assistant, Layla Bridges for assisting with communication. For a second year we have been very fortunate to have Ms. Wendi Stewart assist us with coaching the teams. We are very excited about the future of our 4-H horse program here in Chester County.
January is 4-H public speaking month in Chester County. Students will be participating in their respective clubs, the winners will then advance to the county competition in February.
If you would like more information about our 4-H youth program, give us a call at your local UT Extension office here in Chester County at 731 989-2103, and be sure and follow our Facebook page @UT Extension – Chester County.
