Last week I had a wonderful opportunity to meet with the agriculture students at Chester County High School. They have three greenhouse classes for mostly juniors and seniors and one Agriculture Science class for freshmen and sophomores. Recently, they have been studying soil in the greenhouse classes. My goal was to teach the students the importance of soil testing and to demonstrate how to take a soil test.
Several students got the chance to practice taking a sample. We also discussed how important it was to dry the soil before sending it to the lab. Each student received handouts that are used to send to the soil lab with proper identification and crop codes used by the lab when making their recommendations.
Thanks to Mrs. Teresa Crouse for inviting me to come and spend the day with her classes. We have some awesome students interested in agriculture. Chester County 4-H will have a presence this year at the high school engaging these students in activities that become available here in Chester County and the region. Mrs. Crouse and I wanted to use this day to promote FFA/4-H to our agriculture students. Both are excellent programs who can work together side by side to benefit all of our students.
