On Thursday, Nov. 14, both of the Chester County Junior High Basketball teams left with victorious against Decatur County.
The girls started the game on top and strong as they started the game with a three-pointer and scored 9 points before the Decatur County scored even one.
However, Decatur County never gave up. Throughout the whole game, the Panthers may have fallen behind sometimes but they always managed to inch their way back on the heels of the Eaglettes. The Eaglettes were up by eight points at the end of the first quarter and the lead remained the same at halftime with both teams scoring a total of nine points in the second. The score margin decreased to 6 by the end of the third. Then, the fourth quarter is when both teams gave it their all.
Throughout the night, Decatur County managed to sink 3’s and in the fourth, they sank four of the six 3’s that they made. Their last three-pointer with 12.3 seconds remaining is what made the moments of the game intense as it made the score 43-40. Nonetheless, Chester County was able to seal the win with #24 Jena Melton scoring a free throw with under 10 seconds left making it 44-40 and the Eaglettes stole and held the ball in the last seconds preventing the Panthers from scoring again.
“We want her on the free throw line,” Head Coach Wes Murphy said. “She’s probably one of our best ones. Nerves don’t get to her.”
The CC Boys’ team though outplayed their opponent each quarter and ended the game 54-22. The Eagles played such a great game that 12 out of the 14 players were able to score at least one shot and only one player being in double digits.
“In the second half we turned them over and we’d get some easy buckets,” Boys’ Head Coach Bobby Helton said. “When we can get 12 kids to score, we’re probably going to be pretty successful.”
