Chester County Retired Teachers appoint new officers

President Sylvia Harris welcomed members and visitors to the June 17 meeting at Snookum’s restaurant. She expressed appreciation to People’s Bank for sponsoring the meal. She introduced Chastity Burns, People’s Bank representative, who expressed appreciation for Chester County Schools and for Chester County teachers.
President Harris introduced Gideon McManus, this year’s scholarship recipient from Chester County High School. Gideon’s parents, Trent and Kristi McManus, were honored to be in attendance with him. Gideon thanked us for the scholarship.
The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Kay Ivy. Nancy Lofton presented the Thought for the Day, which challenged all of us to stand up to adversity. Ralph Mays gave thanks for the meal and once again thanked People’s Bank and Snookum’s for the delicious meal.
The minutes from the December meeting were read by Marti McDaniel. Jennie Fletcher gave the treasurer’s report. These reports were approved as read.
Martha Lewis gave a report on the Spring Leadership Workshop that was held on March 9 in Jackson at the first Baptist Church. Members attending this workshop were President Sylvia Harris, Vice President Jean Smith, secretary Jane Rowlett and Community Participation Committee member Martha Lewis. This meeting addressed the topics of promoting membership, legislative issues that affect public education, the importance of making educators’ voices heard and challenges for the coming year. The membership challenge for 2020 is 20 in 20. Our current membership will need to increase by eight members to meet the challenge.
The service project for June was presented by Nancy Connor. Our retired teachers group made a donation to Imagination Library.
President Sylvia Harris thanked the members of the association for all the hard work and support that had been given to her as president the past two years.
Ralph Mays presented the slate of officers for 2020-2022 – President Jean Smith, Vice President Martha Lewis, secretary Marti McDaniel, and treasurer Jenny Fletcher. Mr. Mike Barker, TRTA lobbyist, installed the new officers. After the installation of officers, Mr. Barker gave an update on the retirement system and the efforts being made to keep the retirement system strong and secure.
After door prizes were distributed, Sylvia Harris gave one last “thank you” to People’s Bank, Snookum’s and all the members who made the effort to get out and attend the meeting. The meeting was adjourned.

At the June meeting Chester County Retired Teachers members installed new officers: President Jean Smith, Vice President Martha Lewis, secretary Marti McDaniel and Treasurer Jenny Fletcher.
