
Funeral services for Clara Sue (Smith) Stanfill were at 10 a.m. Monday at Shackelford Funeral Directors Crook Avenue Chapel with Bro. Brad Patterson, Troy Allen Smith, Jr., Amy Green and Amber Lay officiating. Burial followed at Unity Cemetery at Jacks Creek. The family received friends Sunday afternoon from 4-7 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Henderson, and again Monday morning at the funeral home on Crook Avenue.
She was born Aug. 25, 1930 in Hardin County near Sardis. Her parents were Arnold Alexander Smith and Ida Elizabeth (Newman) Smith. She attended school for a half year at Sardis before moving to Chester County. She then attended Plainview School from first through eighth grade and Chester County High School, graduating in 1949. After graduating in May 1949, she went to work as secretary to the principal of Chester County High School in July 1949. The first 25 years she worked under Mr. James Williams and remained in that position for 44 years before retiring in 1993.
She was married to Joe Ramon for 57 years, and they made their home in Luray. She was a member of Chester County Teacher’s Organization and a member of First Baptist Church since 1947. She served as Sunday School Secretary for a number of years and taught in the children’s department for over 30 years. She was a beloved member of her Sunday school class and had many dear friends. In 2010, she and Joe were honored by being named “Mr. and Mrs. Chester County.” In 2016, they were both presented Legacy awards by the Chester County High School Alumni Association.
She remained close to her family her entire life and was loved dearly by all. She touched the lives of so many and will be remembered far beyond her years as a life led to serve others.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Ramon Stanfill; three sisters-in-law, Mary (Steed) Smith, Peggy Stanfill and Sarah (Richard) Berkel; nieces and nephews, Ida Marie Smith, Troy Allen (Dorinda) Smith, Jr., James Arnold (Toni) Smith, Judy Stanfill, Myrna (Danny) Stanfill, Barbara (Mike) Magyer, Donna Ledbetter and Nancy (Dave) Fouts; great-nieces and nephews, Wade Smith, Riley Smith, Pierce Smith, Amy Green, Amber (Steven) Lay, Gregory Felder, Matthew (Leah) Magyer, Stephanie Ledbetter, Aaron Fouts and Michael Fouts; great-great-nieces and nephews, Kimberly Felder, Camron Magyer, Makinsey Howell, Cooper Lay and Christian Lay; and a great-great-great-nephew, Waylon Henson, whom she recently got to meet.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy Madison Smith and Troy Allen Smith; a sister, Vera Nell (Smith) Benson; one brother-in-law, Gerald Stanfill; and two nephews, Danny Stanfill and Chris Stanfill.
