In the early morning of Thursday, May 16, at 3:19 a.m., an earthquake occurred four miles south of Ridgley with a magnitude of 3.8. The earthquake had a depth of 7.3 kilometers (about 4.5 miles).
Throughout Tennessee’s recent earthquake history, the magnitude typically does not extend above a 2.0.
According to Chester County Emergency Management Director Brandon Connor, preventative preparation is very important when it comes to earthquakes because little warning is given in advance. Have non-perishable food, water, and medicines somewhere easily accessible and ready to go. This is especially important for smaller counties. It could take longer for help if larger counties are damaged at the same time.
In the event you experience an earthquake, there are several things to note to help ensure your safety:

  • When the shaking begins, drop, cover and hold on. The most important action to do is to turn your face down and cover your head, neck and entire body if possible. You may use a pillow or any other item that makes sure your head will continuously be protected. Getting under a desk or table if able could be lifesaving.
  • After the earthquake finishes, it is important to be very cautious of your surroundings. There will be downed power lines, gas leaks, and fires more than likely. Keep a safe distance from trees, poles and buildings.
  • Turn off gas lines, electricity or any appliances nearby. It is very important to fasten or secure heavy objects.
  • Be sure to properly identify hazards and unsafe looking structures before getting close.
In the meantime, staying connected and spreading earthquake awareness will keep the community safe. It may also save and benefit fellow neighboring communities in Tennessee. To keep updated on tracking and for more information, go to www.earthquaketrack.com.
