While most of the Freed-Hardeman University faithful will be cheering for the United States in the upcoming Olympics, the 3×3 Women’s Basketball Tournament will see many Lady Lion fans root for Spain.
2014 alumna Grace Alonso de Armiño will suit up for her native Spain in the 3×3 Basketball Tournament. Spain stormed through the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Debrecen, Hungary, going a perfect 3-0 through the preliminary round before topping Poland 21-13 to advance to the semifinals. Needing a win to guarantee one of the three qualifying spots, Spain needed to defeat Canada. In the final seconds, Alonso de Armiño scored the winning basket for Spain when her no-look shot gave her squad the 19-18 victory and the right to represent Spain in the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad – Paris 2024.
Spain is the No. 6 seed in the eight-team tournament. Alonso de Armiño and Spain begin their quest for a gold medal against Azerbaijan on July 30. A tough day awaits the team on August 1, facing the No. 1 seed China before facing the 2020 gold medalist United States team.
