Freed-Hardeman University students are returning to campus this week for the fall semester. Freshmen are expected to arrive Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 5 and 6, to move into their residence halls. A drive-through registration when students arrive on campus will enable them to remain in their cars until they are ready to transfer their belongings to the dorm.
Since the university expects significant numbers of students to check in each day, students have made appointments for their arrival times. Returning students will move in over the following three days: seniors, Aug. 7; juniors, Aug. 8; and sophomores, Aug. 9. Temperature checks will greet all those coming to campus.
Interface, FHU’s freshman orientation, will begin Aug. 5 with fewer students than usual in each group and most activities conducted outside. Freshmen arriving Aug. 6 will begin Interface that day.
The annual Tolling of the Bell ceremony is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 10, in Loyd Auditorium. To allow for social distancing, the ceremony will be conducted twice, at 10:30 a.m. and again at 11:30 a.m. Classes also begin that day. The semester will end Nov. 20 prior to what would have been the Thanksgiving break. No holidays or breaks are planned. Winter commencement is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21. Changes to the schedule as well as to the nature of some activities have been made in view of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
FHU President David R. Shannon in a video message to students encouraged students to bring, along with their hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes and masks, a good attitude and a faithful response when they return to campus. “Isn’t it great when the family of Freed-Hardeman comes together? With the right attitude and perspective, we will have a great semester,” he said. “Come home, Freed-Hardeman.”
