Former commissioner and business owner Jessie James Gilliam buried Sunday

Jessie James Gilliam, 77, of Enville passed away May 23, 2022 at Henderson County Community Hospital. Funeral services were 2 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at Shackelford Funeral Directors – Crook Avenue with Bro. Johnny Bullman and Scottie Hopper officiating. Burial followed in Smith Cemetery at Cabo.
He was born Feb. 13, 1945 in Chester County the son of the late Jessie Jackson and Artie Edna Hopper Gilliam. He grew up in Enville and attended Chester County High School. He served a brief time in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Old Path Baptist Church.
He served on the Chester County Board of Commissioners for several years. He worked in construction most of his career and was self-employed owner and operator Gilliam Backhoe Service. He loved to fly and owned his own Cessna airplane. He also loved guns and loved target shooting.

He is survived by a son, Jackie (Christy) Gilliam of Enville; one daughter, Denise Fletchall of Sturgis, S.D.; four grandchildren; and caregiver and great nephew, Jerry (Vicki) Gilliam of Pinson.
He was preceded in death by 14 brothers and sisters.
