Satterly nets five 3-pointers,
leads Lady Lions to victory

Returning to the Brewer Sports Center, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions took advantage of a big second quarter to propel them to an 83-52 victory over the Bulldogs of Fisk (Tenn.) University.
Despite giving up an opening 3-pointer, the Lady Lion (3-0) defense flexed in the first 10 minutes of the game, forcing eight straight missed Fisk shots. Meanwhile, Brooklyn Crouch scored five straight points on fast breaks before Carissa Curtis joined at 6:43 with a 3-pointer that gave the Lady Lions a lead they would not relinquish. From 5:34 until the end of the half, the Lady Lions did not miss a single shot by going 7-7 to wrap the first half. Rachel Satterly netted the first of her five 3-pointers while Jenna Satterly laid up a fast-break layup to end the quarter with a 21-12 advantage.
The second quarter was all Lady Lions with FHU out-scoring Fisk (0-1) 23-9. Lucy Curry tallied a pair of free throws before Curtis and R. Satterly netted back-to-back triples to jump out to a 21-point lead. A jumper from Kelsey Bender in the waning seconds set the halftime Lady Lion lead at 44-19.
R. Satterly continued her hot shooting into the second half, opening the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers before a layup from Curtis made the Lady Lion lead 30. A third tray in the quarter from R. Satterly put the Lady Lions in a 63-33 lead in the final frame. Though the Bulldogs would chip away at the Lady Lion lead, FHU always answered with 3-pointers from J. Satterly, Reese Moore, and Alaina Stiles before Moore’s 3-pointer ended the game in style giving FHU the 83-52 win.
Despite only one turnover separating them – Fisk with 19 and FHU with 18 – the Lady Lions always responded by allowing just four points off of those turnovers. On the other hand, FHU netted 24 points off the Fisk turnovers. FHU’s ball movement showed with the Lady Lions giving out 22 assists to the Bulldogs’ five. Rachel Satterly led all scorers with 15 points, followed by Carissa Curtis and Jenna Satterly with 13 points each. Lilly Kee went 5-8 from the field to score 10. R. Satterly led FHU at the glass with six rebounds while the Satterly sisters each gave out a team-high five assists.

Lions force 21 turnovers in big win

The No. 4 Lions of Freed-Hardeman University took advantage of 21 forced turnovers by scoring 29 points off of those takeaways to help them to a 90-63 victory over the Fisk (Tenn.) University Bulldogs.
The first five minutes had the momentum shifting away from Freed-Hardeman (3-0) with the visiting Bulldogs jumping out to a 12-5 lead with 15:56 remaining in the half. Jordan Stephens would tally a jumper before Peyton Law showed off his range with a 3-pointer. Those points helped spark a 16-1 swing in favor of the maroon and white in the next five minutes when Jayson Nixon’slayup gave the Lions a 21-13 lead halfway through the opening half. Down the stretch of the first half, Fisk would only score nine more points from the floor while FHU poured it on from long range with Blake Dean and Ryley McClaran joining Nixon with 3-pointers. The biggest of the half came when Nixon’s buzzer-beating 3-pointer from mid-court banked off the glass and into the net to send the Lions to the locker room smiling with a 47-28 lead. Law opened the second after with a set of jumpers to maintain a 20-point edge over Fisk (1-1). Two free throws at 13:42 opened up an 11-point unanswered run that led to FHU holding a 70-39 lead. Sam Powell began pouring it on from long range, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers before adding a third at 6:47 to give the Lions a 33-point edge. The Bulldogs then scored 11 unanswered points, but the FHU lead stood firm to finish with the 90-63 victory.
Despite being out-rebounded 32-30, the Lions kept their chances alive by scoring 12 second-chance points off of seven offensive boards. After forcing 21 turnovers, the Lions made the opposition pay by scoring 29 points off of turnovers. Five Lions ended their night in double figures with Phil Horton’s 16-point effort leading the way. Peyton Law was 7-11 from the floor to score 15 points while Jayson Nixon and Jordan Stephens added 11. Blake Dean was 3-5 from long range to bucket 10. Horton and Law led the rebounding with seven and six, respectively.

Lions send off seniors with victory

In their final match at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex, the Freed-Hardeman Lions sent their seniors off with a big victory, topping the Tigers of Georgetown College 2-1. In what was expected to be a physical defensive battle, the Lions (11-4-2, 2-3-0 MSC) took seven shots in the opening 45 minutes to the Tigers’ four. Late in the period, Brandon Carrillo and Seabata Ts’emane fired back-to-back shots with both coming up empty to end the first half with a 0-0 draw. After a set of FHU corners and a shot, it was Georgetown (8-5-2, 1-4-0 MSC) that found the back of the net first at 51:37. The Lions would not trail for long when Vicente Georgi was fouled in the box, setting up a potential equalizing penalty kick. The Chilean fired a missile to the left of the keeper to level the scores at 1-1 at 62:43. Playing with a man advantage for the rest of the match, it was Julien Royer’s heroics in the 85th minute when he took a pass from Thabo Mahlaha and scored the game-winner in the 2-1 victory.

Women’s Soccer falls on Senior Day

After celebrating their seniors, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions tangled with the Tigers of Georgetown College. Despite both teams having even shots on target, the Lion Lions finish on the wrong end of a 3-0 decision. Freed-Hardeman (4-11-0, 0-5-0 MSC) fell behind early when the second shot for the Tigers found the back of the net at 9:22 to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Tsielo Mokebe would fire two shots on target, with a shot from Ellie Wood between, but all three were saved by the GC keeper. A late attempt was swatted away by Ava Pierce to end the first half with the Lady Lions in a 1-0 deficit. The Tigers (6-4-5, 1-4-0 MSC) came out furiously aggressive in the second half, with a shot, four corner kicks, and an offside all within a four-minute span. GC broke through in the 63rd minute with their second goal before putting the match out of reach with their third goal at 64:28 to finish the 3-0 match. Georgetown took nine total shots while FHU sent eight toward the net with both clubs putting seven shots on target.
