On Thursday, Feb. 13, the Freed-Hardeman University Lions Men’s Basketball team had a chance to earn first place in the American Midwest Conference if they were to win over first place Central Baptist.
Though they lost the game 75-71, it was a well contested battle until the end. The first half was very competitive but the Lions were able to enter halftime optimistically with the lead.
In the second half, the two teams kept battling it out.
Central Baptist pulled away and started to stretch the lead by 10 during some points in the half.
As time went on though, the Lions began to comeback slowly.
Once the clock was at about three minutes remaining in the game, FHU was down by three points, 70-67, causing the remainder of the game to be intense.
With about 20 seconds remaining the Lions were down 74-69, then Bryan Battle scored to make the score difference three points.
Nonetheless, it was not enough time for FHU to comeback to win the game.
The leading scorer of the night was Konstantin Dotsenko with a total of 25 points.
“I was very blessed and fortunate tonight to have the opportunity to play for the number one position,” head Coach Drew Stutts said that night.” It’s a position I don’t believe many people thought we would be in this part of the season.”
The Lions got a “W” Saturday, Feb. 15, though over Williams Baptist University, 84-77.
At the time of printing, they are placed in third in the conference with a conference record of 12-5 and an overall of 15-7.
Stutts said he truly appreciates the support the team receives from the community.
“I love the support from the community.
The gym was rocking tonight. It made a huge difference in the game.
I want to thank all the fans for being here and being loud. It was a fun game. I hate that we came up short but we appreciate the support,” he said after the Central Baptist game.
Stutts is hopeful and said that the team’s goals for the year are still obtainable such as winning the conference tournament. The Freed-Hardeman Lions will play William Woods University tonight, Thursday Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m.
