Future Lion and current Eagleville star Ryley McClaran was named the TSSAA Class A Mr. Basketball on Tuesday at Middle Tennessee State’s Murphy Center.
McClaran averaged 30 points, six rebounds and three assists a game while shooting 60 percent from the field, 47 percent from behind the arc and 84 percent from the charity stripe.
He has scored over 2,600 points in his high school career, and he has scored 50 points in a game in both his junior and senior season. He also helped lead his team to the Class A state semifinals in his junior season.
“It was kind of surreal,” McClaran said to the Daily News Journal. “I followed Mr. Basketball ever since I was a kid. I always wanted to be one.
“It feels great. It was a lot of hard work. The work paid off.”
The 6-foot-2 guard will join the Lions basketball team this fall as the team – as well as FHU Athletics as a whole – make the transition into the Mid-South Conference.
“We are so thankful that Ryley chose FHU,” Lions coach Drew Stutts said. “He has had an incredible career, and we can’t wait for him to join our program.
“Ryley is a great player, but also is a great teammate and will represent FHU well on and off the floor. We believe character drives everything, and in my opinion, that’s one of the reasons why Ryley has had so much success. We are excited about getting him here and getting to work.”
