Greetings from Hickory Corner!
It is beginning to look really creepy around Hickory Corner. Kenneth and Teresa Burkhead of Hickory Corner are so creative and have been very busy decorating for Halloween. Their front yard is looking very scary, creepy and spooky with life size dummies. By the time Halloween gets here, it will be a sight to see. They also decorate inside their home with life size dummies. SCARY! Make sure you drive by to check it out. I will be on the lookout for some other Hickory Corner homes decorated for Halloween.
Happy birthday wishes goes out to my great-granddaughter Lainey Patterson who turns 12 (10/5), Kelsey Tummins (10/8), Lonnie Morton (10/9) and Nelson Weaver (10/12). Happy Anniversary wishes to Nelson and Janice Weaver on Oct. 8. Hoping all of you enjoy your special day.
Chester County students are looking forward to their Fall break Oct. 8-15. I am sure they will enjoy their time off, and some will even go on vacation somewhere. I imagine teachers will enjoy their break as well. I remember many, many years ago when schools had their fall break whenever kids were needed to pick cotton to help their families survive. When I was young, I can remember picking cotton for not only my dad but also my Uncle Vernon Morton and Mr. Clarence Cox. This was before mechanical pickers when cotton was picked by hand. It was hard work. Picking cotton would help buy our school clothes for the winter months. Do you remember these sayings: “Wait just a cotton pickin’ minute,” “You’re out of your cotton pickin’ mind,” and “You’re a cotton pickin’ fool.” Maybe some of you still say them.
Do you enjoy watching the old westerns on TV or maybe reading western books? Here are a few that made their mark on America: Buffalo Bill, The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Daniel Boone, Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey. At one time westerns helped teach us history of the olden days and gave us heroes to look up to. I must add that Gunsmoke with Matt Dillon is still a favorite of mine. I have watched a little more of it since the pandemic.
Remember in prayer Arlan Porter, Ann Bennett, Richy Butler, Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Peggy Lard, William and Eddie Luttrell and Donna Lynch. Please continue to pray for all those who are dealing with sickness. Prayers for those who have recently lost loved ones. If you would like to add or remove a name from our prayer list, please call me.
If you would like to rent the HCC Center for your special event, please call Nancy Patterson at 608-1159.
Folks, this is your column. Please call me at 989-3315 with tidbits, birthdays anniversaries, vacations or anything you would like to share with us. I really need to hear from our community.
Make it a great week!
