Greetings from Hickory Corner!
Folks, it is time to fall back! Remember to set your clocks back before going to bed this Saturday, Nov. 7. Enjoy your extra hour of sleep, but remember our days will continue to get shorter. I hate to see sunset come earlier and earlier. Also, it looks like cooler weather, and we are going to have to turn on the heat as the temperatures are going to be down in the 30s at night.
Mark your calendars, as there will be a Christmas Party at the Hickory Corner Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 11. It will be nice to get together again. More information will be coming later.
I guess the kids all had a great time trick-or-treating this past weekend. I know many went to Gene Record Park for a trunk and treat on Saturday. It is always an exciting time for kids to dress up and get treats. I never went trick-or-treating as a child. After James and I married, we moved to downtown Peoria, Ill., in 1951, and I got to experience my first and only time trick-or-treating. There were lots of kids dressed in costumes going up and down the streets with bags full of candy, and I thought it looked like a fun time so I thought why not go. Wayne and Evelyn Clayton Weaver (both grew up in Hickory Corner) lived down the block from us. I was able to convince Evelyn to dress up with me. We threw a sheet over our body and went as ghosts. We bent down low when we went to the doors to look smaller. I remember having so much fun. Wayne walked us all around the neighborhood, and when my James got home from work at midnight, I proudly showed him my big bowl of candy. He could not believe it! That was many, many years ago, but it is still a fond memory.
Recently, Brenda Bishop Berryman and her Aunt Ellna Patterson Roland took a trip to Mansfield, Texas, to visit Don and Carrie Bishop (Brenda’s brother and Ellna’s nephew). Every day Don took them sightseeing. They visited the Cowboy Stadium, Texas Ranger Stadium and ate at Joe T. Garcia’s restaurant, which covers a whole block and seats over 1,000. Ellna reports that they had a great time.
Sympathy and prayers to the family of R.D Smith. R.D and my James were army buddies, taking their basic training at the same time at Camp Rucker in Alabama. After a two week furlough, they were shipped out overseas together to Japan. From there they went to Korea. I have the postcard of the US Navy P2 Transport, General Hugh Gaffey, that James mailed me while on the ship. As I look back from James’ photos from Korea, the soldiers all looked so young. James and R.D. also came back home together at the same time, both serving from 1952-1954. RD’s wife, Johnnie, and I roomed together off base at Camp Rucker when visiting our guys.
Also, remember in prayer Arlan Porter, Ann Bennett, Richy Butler, Ladelle Clark, Mildred Smith, Martha Autry, Ann Morrison, Bonice Martin, Peggy Whitman, Peggy Lard, William and Eddie Luttrell and Donna Lynch. Please continue to pray for all those who are dealing with sickness. Sympathy and prayers for those who have recently lost loved ones. If you would like to add or remove a name from our prayer list, please call me.
If you would like to rent the HCC Center for your special event, please call Nancy Patterson at 608-1159.
Folks, this is your column. Please call me at 989-3315 with tidbits, birthdays anniversaries, vacations or anything you would like to share with us. I really need to hear from our community.
Make it a great week.
