He was born in Gaylord, Mich., the son of Larry and Darcie Koronka. James graduated from Alpena High School in Alpena, Mich.
As a young man, he worked for TruGreen in Michigan. Later in his life, he graduated from Baker College in Flint, Mich., with a degree in transportation. Much of his career was spent hauling freight. He spent 16 1/2 years in trucking, traveling across the U.S. visiting 48 states and Canada. He spent much of his career driving for US Xpress and Mercer Transportation.
He enjoyed mowing lawns, nurturing landscaping, cleaning leaves, laying sod, pruning trees, cutting firewood and shoveling snow.  He also loved old country music. During his time on the road, he enjoyed listening to the Dave Nemo show and Dale Sommers “Truckin Bozo.” He was also a member of OOIDA for many years and Henderson Church of Christ.
He battled cancer for the last three years. During his battle, he remained strong, positive, and courageous. He often stated he hoped to be cancer free one day. Although his physical body lost its battle to cancer, he won his eternal reward.
