Jerome Payne Hurst, 84, of Henderson passed away Tuesday Dec. 24, 2019 at Henderson Health Care Center.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, at Shackleford Crook Avenue Chapel with Glenn Harris and Tommy Davis officiating. 
Burial followed at Chester County Memory Gardens. The family received friends at the Crook Avenue Chapel beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
He was born and reared in the Woodville Community of Chester County, the son of the late William Houston and Fannie Ozelle Hatch Hurst.  He attended Chester County Schools and entered the U. S. Air Force and served from 1955 to 1959.  He married Evelyn Terry in 1961, and they made their home in Henderson.  He worked a few years at Brown Shoe Company.  He began his career with the City of Henderson Police Department in July 1971 and served 26 years, retiring as Chief of Police in 1997.  After retiring, he worked part time with security at Freed-Hardeman University. 
He attended First Baptist Church of Henderson.  He enjoyed working in a very well kept yard as he continued to stay physically strong walking and lifting weights.
He is survived by three children, Jeremy (Miranda) Hurst, Sheila (Jerry) Cloud and Tina (Brad) Graves, all of Henderson; six grandchildren, Adam (Hayley) Cloud, Cody Cloud, Heath (Lauren) Graves, Madison (Kyle) Balding, Mia Hurst and Colton Hurst; three great-grandchildren, Karver Balding, Sadie Cloud, and Caroline Cloud; and a sister Linda Rowland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Evelyn Hurst; a granddaughter, Mallerie Graves; and a sister, Louise Thomas.
