Returning to the Brewer Sports Center after splitting games in a Kentucky road trip, the Lady Lions stepped outside the Mid-South Conference in a 71-61 win over the Welch (Tenn.) College Lady Flames.
The Lady Lions (15-6) were the first on the board after Raegan Purvine was fouled on what would have been the first shot attempt of the game, sinking both free throws. After a Welch layup, FHU would launch ahead with a 10-0 run on the back of Rachel Satterly, who bucketed two 3-pointers and joining KJ White’s first quarter bucket with a layup. Kelsey Bender finishing the first quarter strong with seven points including a triple to end the frame with FHU on top 22-9.
In their first trip to Henderson, Welch (10-14) chipped away at the FHU lead in the second quarter. A trio of 3-pointers helped the Lady Flames stay within striking distance. With the Lady Lions utilizing their bench for a majority of the quarter, Morgan Quick and Julieth Rivera Morales put their names in the scorebook with good free throws. It was a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Welch that sent the teams to the locker room with FHU leading 37-27.
The third quarter was all Lady Lions, who out-scored the Lady Flames 24-8. Purvine and Madisyn Baugher opened the quarter with layups before Kalea Fleming’s 3-point jumper sparked a 17-3 run for the Lady Lions to close the quarter with FHU on top 61-35.
Welch began to light up the nylon in the final period, knocking down six 3-pointers – five of which came from Abby Bragg. The Lady Lions’ bench hit a set of 3-pointers of their own, from the hands of Quick and Rees Berkey. Desipte ending the game on a 15-3 run, FHU’s big night from the bench helped to a 71-61 final in favor of the Lady Lions.
FHU matched their season’s highest mark in both field goal attempts (64) and forced turnovers (19). FHU dominated in the paint, outscoring the Lady Flames 34-14 from the key. Ten of the 12 Lady Lions to touch the hardwood ended with points, led by Kelsey Bender’s 14-point effort joined by a team-high six rebounds. Rachel Satterly joined with 10 points. Rees Berkey nabbed three steals while Raegan Purvine doled out four assists.
Up Next – The Lady Lions storm back into Mid-South Conference play with a set of big home games. First, FHU will host the (RV) Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers before welcoming in the No. 24 University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots. Tipoff against GC is set for Thursday, January 26 at 5:30 p.m., while Saturday’s game with UC will get underway at 1 p.m.
