Here is the scoop. Our after school program is going great. East Chester had a special visitor to come for the after school program last Tuesday. Ms. Leah brought her dog Laken to show the kids how a dog walks on a leash, how dogs sit and stay and a special paw shake. For dog safety she also went over the importance of approaching a dog and discussing what to do if a strange dog approaches you. Students were able to walk her lab Laken on her leash using the word “heel.” Laken did a few more tricks, and the students had lots of questions. It was a fun and interesting afternoon at East Chester.
In school counseling Mrs. Missy is teaching about the importance of honesty this week. Most children lie to cover up a mistake and avoid punishment. When a child tells a lie, it does not mean that child is headed for a lifetime of delinquency. Lying is a normal part of development. Here are six tips to foster honesty in our children by Julia Cook, author of Lying Up a Storm.
Instead of asking, “Did you leave the door open?” Say, “I know you left the door open, try to remember next time.”
Sometimes reminding our children about the importance of being honest before asking about a certain event, can help our children be more honest.
If we promise not to get upset about something, follow through and not get upset.
Be honest ourselves.
Let your child know they are loved unconditionally. Always separate what they do from who they are.
Focus on building trust and communication with children instead of focusing on their behavior problem. This is the quickest way to diminish lying.
Parent Teacher Conferences will be held next week. Teachers will be holding conferences by phone, email or virtually. You should have already received information about scheduling appointments. There will be no school on Friday, Oct. 9. Fall Break is Oct. 9-16.
Red Ribbon Week is Oct. 19-23. The theme this year for Red Ribbon Week is, “Be Happy, Be Brave, Be Drug Free!” Mrs. Missy will have some fun things planned that week to help our children say no to drugs.
Picture Remakes will be Oct. 20.
