Here at East Chester we are enjoying being in school. We are still taking many steps to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus. Fall weather is beautiful, and any chance we get, we go out and enjoy the weather. Last week, we had extra D.E.A.R. (drop everything and read) time outside. In third grade we just finished a unit on animals. The students will publish a book about animals as a class. We also learned how to multiply and divide fluently. This is an important skill for third graders. In science we discussed the weather and climate.
Our second graders studied ancient Greek civilization. Their math standard was to fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction. In Social Studies we described the three branches of the U.S. government and the basic role of each and identified the rights and responsibilities of citizens of the U.S.
First graders learned so much! They are reading and writing more independently every day. First graders worked hard to become fluent in addition. They attempted to correctly answer 25 facts in one minute. They learned more about the human body and space. Friday was Jennifer Chapman’s last day at East Chester. She is a student teacher from UT at Martin and has been in Ms. Nancy’s room. It is a great time to be a first grader at East Chester!
Kindergarten learned about the first Thanksgiving. They learned about the Lakota Sioux, Lenape and the Wampanoag Native Americans. We know about the Pilgrims and the hard voyage on the Mayflower. We know how thankful the pilgrims were to have the Native Americans help them survive in the New World. We discussed the number 10 and different ways to make 10. They continued to practice drawing and describing 2 and 3D shapes. They practiced a Thanksgiving play and will video the play and upload for parents and family to enjoy.
IXL is a program we are using this year. This program has all the math and reading skills your child needs to know for their grade level. Please practice a few skills daily. Perfect practice makes perfect! Awards were given this week for the most skills practiced. Ask your child if he/she received a book.
Be looking for information about Cajun Cookers smoked turkeys, Boston butts, pork loins and hams. Information will go home on Monday, Nov. 30, and these items will be available for pickup the week we get out for Christmas. Proceeds for this sale will go towards our Relay for Life donation.
