It is hard to believe it is the last week of August! What a great month it has been at East Chester. On Friday, our third graders presented the first Leader in Me assembly and did an amazing job! It was shared on the East Chester PTO page, but they will also be presenting a portion of the program at September’s school board meeting, which will be at ECES on Sept. 23.
In kindergarten they will be working on more letters and sounds. This week they will introduce letters oO and cC as well as review the letters they have already learned. In math they will continue their study of the numbers with a focus on the number three. They are learning about the five senses as well.
First graders are working hard! They are starting to discuss the parts of a paragraph and will be working on building their writing stamina. In math they are working on adding doubles! First graders just finished a study on Responsible Citizenship and will now be moving onto a study about Space. They are working hard in their reading curriculum as well. First grade is learning about fables and determining what the moral of each fable is. They will be moving on to a study about similar stories from different lands and comparing those stories. So much learning is happening!
In second grade they will be finishing up unit one in their reading curriculum and begin unit two. They are exploring odd and even numbers. With that, they will be proving and explaining how they know a number is odd and even. They are studying Fairy Tales and Tall Tales, including a reading about Paul Bunyan. Second graders are looking at Maps and will be learning about our neighbors, Canada and Mexico. They will use what they have learned and write about Canada.
Third grade is off to a terrific start this year as well! In reading they finished reading, “Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, Part I.” They will begin reading, “The River Bank Part 2” from “The Wind in the Willows.” With these readings they are discussing different themes being presented in their read-aloud. In math they will continue their study on different strategies and properties used to add and subtract.
At the PTO meeting on Aug. 23, they kicked off their membership drive. It is $3 to join PTO, and we would love for you to join! The classes with 100% participation will be entered for a prize drawing, and the students with the most money raised will also win a prize. PTO is a vital part of East Chester, and we are so thankful for everything they do!
