The New Year is a time of reflection and a time to move forward. A new year brings much hope, yet we never know what the future will hold.

The New Year is a good time to reflect on gratitude. Often, we do not realize all the positive we have in our lives, as sometimes we focus only on the negative. Try making a list of all those things you are grateful for, and I bet you will be surprised how long it is. We are so blessed. Just look around your home and think about 100 years ago. No refrigerator, no microwave, no washer/dryer and ladies had no hair dryers! Very rarely did people have a bathroom. There was essentially only one type of car, the Model T, also known as the Tin Lizzie, and barely anyone drove. For many years the Model T came only in black. Before the invention of the Model T, car ownership was not possible for the everyday American; however, once the car was affordable, around $900, people all over the country began to drive. Back then you only had one option to chose from, but today there are many models and color of cars to buy.
In the 1940s, my dad owned a Model T Ford, and we would usually drive to town on Saturday. My sister, Mildred, and I would beg our dad to park down on front street away from others as most folks had better cars than us, but no way. My dad drove right through town on Main Street. I did not think about being thankful back then for just having a car. Shame on me! Our dad would give us a quarter, which went a long way back then. I would spend 10 cents for the movie theatre, and I did without popcorn, so I had 15 cents afterwards to spend for a burger and soda at Hodges Trolley Car, located next to the theatre. You could smell those burgers all over town. Now and then, my dad would give me extra money for Jeurgens lotion and face cream. Yes, I am grateful for so many things today!
The HCC will have a monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 23. We will be planning our Valentine’s Party and are always looking for help and new ideas. Please join us to help plan events for this year and support our center.
