Greetings from Hickory Corner!
Labor day is Monday, Sept. 6. It is a federal holiday so many of you will have the day off. It is a day to celebrate and honor the accomplishments of American workers who paved the way to better working conditions including better hours and better pay. Did you know that Labor Day was originally celebrated each Sept. 5, beginning in 1882 in New York City? In 1894 it became a federal holiday and was moved to the first Monday in September, making it a three day weekend for many. (U.S. Dept. of Labor). For many Labor Day is the unofficial end of summer and is celebrated with parties and picnics. I remember when my kids were young their school did not begin until after Labor Day, so it really did seem like it marked the end of their summer.
How sad to watch the devastation of Hurricane IDA in New Orleans and the surrounding areas. The stories and photos on the news are just heartbreaking. I can not imagine going through that and losing my home and all my belongings. Let us all pray for those that are affected and those involved in recovery efforts. “I will say of the Lord, He is my fortress, my refuge and my God in whom I trust.” – (Psalm 91:2)
COVID cases continue to increase in Chester County. I am wearing my mask when out and hope that all of you are, too. Together, we can get through this.
I stopped by recently to see my sister-in-law Ellna Roland, and we had a nice visit.
