The Hickory Corner Community Center will hold its annual Christmas potluck dinner at 5 p.m. this Saturday, Dec. 14. Bring your favorite dish to share. If you would like to participate in the $5 gift exchange, ladies bring a ladies’ gift, men bring a man’s gift and children bring a child’s gift. There will be a drawing for Mr. and Mrs. Santa, Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph and several Elves. We will be playing Bingo so bring some wrapped bingo gifts. This will be a fun evening, so plan to come and enjoy great food and fellowship. All are welcome at our center.

My son Terry spent last week with me. As always, he was very busy while he was here. Before he left, he took me to dinner at Snookum’s as an early celebration for my birthday, Dec. 12.
Remember in prayer the sick and all those that have lost loved ones. God knows every problem and every need. Our community extends sympathy to the families of Bill Askew, Bill Latham, Betty Steed, Bobby Benson and Rickey Hearn.
This week, Ann Morrison shares a memory of a Christmas from years ago. Ann is the daughter of the late Joe and L.E. Garner and sister of Alfred Garner, Peggy Whitman and the late Jessie Rowland. Ann said that when she was seven years old, her father came home with a perfect little Christmas tree and put it in the corner by their fireplace a few days before Christmas. Her family decorated it with strings of popcorn, loops of colored paper glued together with flour paste, and a string of red holly berries. She thought it was the most beautiful tree. On Christmas Eve she hung her stocking on the fireplace along with her sister Jessie Lee, brother Alfred and baby sister Peggy. They went to bed with happy hearts and snuggled up in warm thick quilts awaiting Santa’s arrival. They awoke on Christmas morning to stockings filled with two oranges, two apples, nuts, orange slices, and chocolate drops. That Christmas, Santa left Ann a beautiful doll that she had asked for and was so excited to get it. Later in the morning, they walked outside and found wrapped hard candy by the chimney. They figured Santa’s bag must have had a hole in it! Christmas dinner was fresh baked ham, chicken and dressing, and plenty of fresh canned vegetables. Their favorite cake was a fresh coconut cake and a three layer chocolate cake with a red layer in the middle with chocolate frosting. Ann said their family was blessed with many wonderful Christmases. Thank you, Ann, for sharing. Yes, Christmas was very different in those days, and we cherish our memories of the Good Ole Days.
