This week Anita Lambert shares with us some wonderful highlights and reflections from a Bible school camp that she worked at this Summer.
“Five years ago Sanford Hill Baptist Church commissioned to Waterbury Baptist Ministries Church to do VBS at their summer day camp. Maner Tyson is the Pastor. We missed 2020 because of COVID. This year we were able to send two teams, so two full weeks of camp. I have been blessed to be able to go all four years. We average 20 children. Several of the children do not have the normal daily necessities that we take for granted. Only a few go to church and know about God and Jesus. We were stunned that they did not know how to sing ‘Jesus Loves Me.’ We have the usual VBS activities. I have taught crafts every year. We are busy from the moment we arrive until we start the trip back home. We check in our motel and then meet Pastor and get a briefing about the coming week. We go to Sunday worship and Sunday school. We eat and then start to decorate. Yes, we go all out. We have the same theme that we use at SHBC. Camp is from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday night, they have entertainment on the church square. We serve hotdogs to the people who come and invite them to church. Many are homeless. Wednesday night is our commissioning service. Thursday night is family night. We serve and work, but we do have Monday night free. If you are brave enough, you can join the ones who choose to blitz New York City. That means you walk five-seven miles in five hours and see all the main sites. This year because we were waiting on second team to arrive we had Monday and Friday free so we did Boston and NYC. Also we eat. We know all the spots.
“I come home tired but so blessed. We love Pastor Maner, his family and the members of Waterbury church. Their number is not great, but their servant hearts are as big as the ocean. Each year we have seen the fruit of our work in some of the children. Each year, we see over half who are new. Another child to love, but more important we tell that child God loves them Jesus loves them and we love them.”
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about Anita’s trip and how they served the children of the community. I would love to hear more narratives of others’ summer trips or experiences. If you have news to share please email me at tatteredthread@gmail.com or call or text 608-3921.
The Lambert family reunion is coming up, so be sure to save the date! The family reunion will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Barbara Lambert’s house. Bring a dish or two or two, a lawn chair and your family. See people you have not seen in a year and maybe even a ball game of some kind. Hope to see all Lamberts this year!
