The offense for the Freed-Hardeman University Lions is beginning the year strong, following a 6-0 victory with an 8-0 victory Saturday against the University of Heath Sciences and Pharmacy (Mo.) Eutectics.
Noah Setterberg got the offense rolling for FHU (2-0-0) in the first half after Seabata Ts’emane’s shot ricocheted off of the crossbar to a waiting Setterberg at 27:23 to boot in his second goal of the season. Not 10 minutes later, David Okantey netted the first of his two goals after Brandon Carrillo centered a pass back from the goal line to a waiting Okantey to take a 2-0 lead at 36:27. A foul in the box in the 39th minute set up Vicente Georgi to toe in the third goal of the match for the Lions to close the first half with a 3-0 lead. The Lions maintained possession for a majority of the half, firing 12 shots toward the UHSP keeper.
In the second half, a beautiful tic-tac-toe play had Thabo Mahlaha sending a through pass from the top of the box to a waiting Jay Fishpaw who one-touched it over to Carrillo who buried FHU’s fourth goal at 57:55 to take a 4-0 lead over UHSP (0-1-0). At 65:00, Mahlaha scored his first goal of the campaign, off a beautiful strike off a free kick just outside of the box. In the 70th minute, Carrillo fired a shot toward the net, but just to make sure the point was scored Paolo Sparks put boot on ball to take a 6-0 lead. After the Eutectic keeper lost control of the ball, Saban Bell was there to knock in his second goal of the season at 74:23. Okantey put a nice bow on the match when a pass from Cooper Magan led right to the Ghanaian’s boot to tally the eighth and final goal of the match.
Between the pipes, Orlando Whiteside, Jr. recorded the clean sheet making two saves. The Lions put up 23 shots, 14 of which were on target.
