Chickasaw crowd breaks all records
A record-breaking crowd, variously estimated by park officials and others at from 6,500 to 7,500, enjoyed Fourth of July outings at Lake Placid in Chickasaw Park.
Swimming, boating and picnicking were the chief sports indulged in by the celebrants. 310 swim tickets beings on Sunday and 502 on the fourth.

Ten more county youths assigned to CCC Camps
Ten more Chester County youths are now enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps, they having been accepted for enlistment last week after having passed examinations at the CCC Camp in Adamsville….. These are: Jess Weaver, Finger; William Allen, Lula; J.H. Pusser, Henderson; Thomas Middleton, Beech Bluff; Howard Cox, Bethel Springs, Monroe Dickson, Montezuma; and J.L. Foster of Henderson.

Big Picnic program
Chester County’s biggest celebrations of the year, the ninth annual picnic and barbecue of the Davidson-Haltom American Legion Post No. 157, is attracting thousands of visitors here today (Thursday) for the most outstanding program ever presented at the big event. Highlights of the day was the scheduled appearance of Tennessee’s chief executive, Governor Prentice Cooper.
Boys Pratt property
for funeral home
Laurence Moffitt, Henderson funeral director, Saturday purchased the spacious Pratt home on Cason Street from Miss Pearl Pratt, her mother, Mrs. Tishie Pratt, and Mrs. Mary O’Neal Brown, heirs of the late W.H. Pratt, and plans to convert it into a thoroughly modern funeral home. … The funeral home, Henderson’s first, will be on a par with those in larger cities and is to be an institution of which Henderson may well be proud.

County to vote Aug. 5 on liquor sales
Chester County votes August 5 on the question of legalizing the sale of liquor in package form, a special election having been called for that date by the County Board of Election Saturday.
Because of the poll tax provision a light vote is expected.

Lions won two, tied one
Henderson fans were treated to all kinds of baseball over the weekend, from the dull to the thrilling. Last Thursday night the thrill came when Dick Moffitt proved the Frank Merriwell finish to the seemingly lost game when in the last of the ninth, with two out and trailing 4 to 3, he smashed a triple to right center to score Paul Melton and then scored himself on a wild throw.

Referendum set on Bond Issue of $850,000 for new schools
The regular term of Chester County Quarterly Court met on Monday, July 31, with Judge Ernest Jones presiding. Judge Willard Smith read a resolution regarding Little League Baseball and which was advanced at the request of the Jaycees and the Chester County Lions Club…. Asks the county court for an appropriation of money to be taken from the beer tax fund of the county for lighting the field on the campus of Chester County High School… The court voted through a motion not to make the appropriation.
…. Motion which was voted upon whereby the question will be put to referendum read: “Motion made by Tom McCorkle, seconded by C.T. Mitchell to hold a referendum on Sept. 12 for expenditure of $850,000 for building new schools in the county in several districts and also a new elementary school in the Sixth District.”

Aviation Machinist Mate Second Class James E. Horn, USN, husband of the former Miss Martha J. Horn of Jacks Creek completed his annual reservist two-week active duty training.
Army Sergent First Class Herbert P. Barnes, whose wife Kathlene, lives at 360 S. Hampton Street, Manasass, Va., was assigned May 19 to the 41st Signal Battalion near Qui Nhon, Vietnam, as a field radio operator.

Now that U.S. spacemen have gone beyond the planet earth in their space explorations, INDEPENDENT Publisher “Woodie” Whaley said he is added “U.S.A. and Earth” to the paper’s page one date line.

Sgt. Larry Vinson awarded Bronze Star
Army Sergeant Larry E. Vinson, 24, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emmit C. Vinson, Enville, received the Bronze Star Medal July 1 in Vietnam. St. Vinson earned the award for outstanding meritorious service.
Weeks wounded in ‘Nam
Second Lieutenant Tim Weeks, son of Mr. and Mrs. John L. Weeks of Henderson was slightly wounded while on a night mission in Viet Nam on July 24, the Secretary of the Army informed Mr. and Mrs. Weeks this week.

Mayfield’s Major Team moved to first place this week to join their Minor Team which had taken the lead last week …. With Mayfield scoring on 6 hits by Harris, Hardin, Record, Newman, Haskins and Barclay.
