Roy Travis Hurst, 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 7, 2022. A memorial service will be held at the Little Hatchie Primitive Baptist Church in Masseyville at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 26. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Alzheimer’s Association.
He was born in Marysville, Calif., on Feb. 14, 1938. He was raised in Henderson by his parents Arnold and Gladys Hurst. After completing electronics school in Atlanta, Ga., he landed a job with Vitro Services and would go on to spend the next 47 years as a government contractor until retiring from Indyne in 2009. He met and married his beloved wife, Janet Jones Hurst in April 1963. The couple celebrated over 50 wonderful years together and made Fort Walton Beach, Fla., their home, during which time they had three sons Andy, Cary and Joey. He was heavily involved with the community and his church. In addition to his government contractor career, he became the Chief of the Mary Esther Volunteer Fire Department in the early 70s, and he spent several years officiating high school football games throughout Northwest Florida. He spent many years coaching his sons in little league baseball, during which time he had the honor of being head coach for the Mary Esther Allstars (1979 District Champions), and spent several years coaching youth bowling. He will always be warmly remembered, above all else, as being the BEST DAD!
He is survived by his son, Andy (William Beckworth) Hurst; son, Cary (Sandy) Hurst; his brother, Harold (Carlin) Newman Hurst; sister, Shirley Burkeens; brother-in-law, David (Beth) Jones; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Gladys Hurst Holmes; step-father, Elvie Holmes; wife, Janet Jones Hurst; son, Joseph Hurst; and brother, Leon Holmes.
