For the first time in a decade the Chester County Eagles are once again Region champions. Friday night’s resounding 49-20 win over North Side High School solidified the Eagles place in the state playoffs.
In what can be described as a Cinderella season, the Eagles finished the regular season 8-2, much better than predicted when the season began.
The girls cross country team of Bella Lamb, Hanna Cherry, Eden Burleson, Camyrn Connor, and Jaylyn Yelverton made it to the state championship for the first time in school history. Bella Lamb won the regional championship and Hanna Cherry won a top 20 medal.
Returning to the Brewer Sports Center, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions took advantage of a big second quarter to propel them to an 83-52 victory over the Bulldogs of Fisk (Tenn.) University.
The No. 4 Lions of Freed-Hardeman Univer-sity took advantage of 21 forced turnovers by scoring 29 points off of those takeaways to help them to a 90-63 victory over the Fisk (Tenn.) University Bulldogs.
In their final match at the Josh Riley Soccer Complex, the Freed-Hardeman Lions sent their seniors off with a big victory, topping the Tigers of Georgetown College 2-1.
After celebrating their seniors, the Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions tangled with the Tigers of Georgetown College. Despite both teams having even shots on target, the Lion Lions finish on the wrong end of a 3-0 decision.
To say that Friday night’s playoff game was a nail-biter would be an understatement.
Both defenses kept offenses in check throughout the game. Chester County’s defensive line was outstanding in controlling the run and the linebackers and secondary were on the receivers like Gorilla Glue despite two pass interference penalties.
At the end of regulation, the score was tied at seven forcing overtime. Even though they turned the ball over four times Chester County won the toss and elected to play defense. Creek Wood took the ball at the 10-yard-line and pushed it over the goal line in three plays. The PAT was good, leading 14-7.

The Chester County High School Girls and Boys Cross Country teams competed in the TSSAA D1 4-A State Cross Country Meet in Hendersonville last Thursday. For the girls’ team, this was their first state appearance as a team in school history. The girls finished 14 out of 31 teams.
The CCHS Boys finished 16 out 30 teams.
Chester County’s Cinderella season came to an end Friday night at the hands of Pearl Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School of Nashville, 56-28, in the second round of the state playoffs. They were the Region 4 champs and the reigning state chamions.
Picked to finish last in region and have a dismal season, the Eagles proved the prognosticators wrong and finished the regular season 8-2 and were the Region 6 champions, making it to the playoffs second round in over a dozen years. The score of Friday’s game was much closer than the scoreboard depicted.

Facing their toughest test of the season, the (RV) Freed-Hardeman University Lady Lions met the (RV) Mustangs of The Master’s University. Despite the Mustangs taking a 13-point lead early in the second quarter, the Lady Lions battled back to win 71-66. Carissa Curtis knocked down eight 3-pointers to tie for the fourth-most in a single game in FHU history.
A top 15 battle lived up to its billing with the No. 7 Freed-Hardeman University Lions hosting the No. 11 Central Baptist (Ark.) College Mustangs. Regulation was not enough. One overtime was not enough. It took two overtime periods to determine the victor with FHU battling to the 91-89 win.
The Chester County Eagles and Eaglettes had a tough time in their home opener against South Gibson High School Friday night.
The Eaglettes fell 51-32 while the Eagles ended the night losing to South Gibson 73-52.
The Chester County High School Lady Eagles opened its season on the road at Tennessee Christian Acadamy in Jackson.
The final score was 57-30. The Eaglettes trailed the entire game, coming within 10 points at the end of the first quarter.
