Donna Newman – June 3, 1946 – Sept. 28, 2024

Donna Kay Newman, 78, died at her home in Bethel Springs on Saturday morning, Sept. 28, 2024.
Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1, at Shackelford Funeral Directors - Crook Avenue Chapel with burial to follow in Chester County Memory Gardens.
The family received friends at Crook Avenue Chapel from 5-8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 30.
She was born in the Masseyville Community in Chester County on June 3, 1946, daughter of the late Alvin Cecil and Launia Rovine Hurst Rowland. She was a graduate of Chester County High School.
She began her working career while still in high school working at Bells Diner. Her favorite jobs over the years involved helping people. She worked in Jackson with a job placement program and later began working for the state of Tennessee as GED Instructor and Job Placement Coordinator in Henderson.
In her younger years, she and her brother enjoyed showing horses, and she retained her love for horses throughout her life.
She also loved her dogs and leaves behind Shiloh, Tay and Joey. She loved shopping for clothes and being “Frou Frou.” She was a devout Christian who loved spending time with her family, especially her great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughter, Brandi (David) Kinman Henry of Bethel Springs; two grandchildren Joshua (Holly) Stansell and Tyler Stansell; and three great grandchildren Ethan, Lily and Aleaha Stansell.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Johnny C. Newman in 2011; a son Robert Anthony Stansell in 2021; and one brother, Larry Ronald Rowland.

Philip Stone – Aug. 27, 1942 – Sept. 29, 2024

Philip Taylor Stone passed Sept. 29, 2024 surrounded by love and family.
Calling Hours were at Shackelford Funeral Directors, Casey Chapel, 304 Crook Avenue in Henderson, from 5:30-7:30 pm Tuesday, Oct. 1, followed by Military Honors and a memorial service with Rick Brumback officiating.
Memorial services will also be held in Syracuse, N.Y., with date and time to be determined. He will be interred in Cedar Park Cemetery, Hudson, N.Y.
He was born and reared in Syracuse, N.Y., Aug. 27, 1942 by his predeceased parents Marian Lampman and Theodore Fisher Stone.
He was truly one of a kind. He never met a stranger. He had a joy for life and people that was evident in all he did. He served as a staff sergeant in the US Army. He was a sports enthusiast and often said “root for the underdog!” He was a fan of Syracuse University and all their athletics. In his words, he “bled orange.” He dedicated many volunteer hours within the Episcopal church, heralding their outreach programs. He spent many hours promoting community activities and specifically Nottingham High School.
He retired from a career in packaging sales. After which he chose to serve others and stay active while driving school buses, coaches and finally medical transport where he made many friends. His passengers would always leave feeling better than when they had arrived.
He is survived by his children, Karen Stone and Nathalie (Rick) Brumback, both of Henderson, and Theodore (Rebecca) Stone of Hingham, Mass. His children were shared with his first wife Laurie Potter Stone. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Theodore Boylan, Catherine (Steven) Akin, Peter (Kara) Boylan, Philip (Raelynn) Brumback, Edmund Brumback, William Stone, John Stone and Lauren Stone; two great-grandchildren, Nathalie and Winnie-Mae Akin; his sisters, Nathalie (Jim) Buckley and Elizabeth Stone; sister-in-law Sandy Stone; two honorary brothers Thomas (Naomi) Hitchcock and Michael (Judy) O’Connor; and his many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Suzanne LaVere Herbst; his older brother, Peter Stone; and brother-in-law, Robert Smith.

DEBI ‘OMA’ PHILLIPS – July 24, 1960 – Sept. 24, 2024

Debra Ann Hopper Phillips, 64, of Henderson passed away Sept. 24, 2024, at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Memorial services were 3 p.m. Saturday at Old Friendship Baptist Church, with Dr. Ashley Ray officiating.
The family received friends at the church beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.
She was born July 24, 1960, the daughter of the late Peggy Junell Russell Luna and Roy Allen Hopper. She grew up in Jackson and was a graduate of Jackson Central Merry High School.
She married John M. Phillips on Sept. 22, 1995. They made their home in Henderson. Mr. Phillips preceded her in death on June 12, 2020.
She worked for Service Merchandise in Jackson for 17 years until it closed. She then worked as a teller at Chester County Bank for several years. She last worked at Southwest Human Resources as central kitchen cook. She was a member of Old Friendship Baptist Church.
She loved her kids and grandkids and spending time with them. They affectionately called her “Oma.” She enjoyed her “girl trip” excursions with her friends.
She is survived by a son, Noah Phillips of Henderson; one daughter Rebecca Christine (Matthew) Gowens of Phoenix, Ariz.; her father, Roy Allen (Kathleen) Hopper of Vero Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Loralai, Olivia, Casper “Buddy” and Gideon “Bear” Gowens; a brother, Christopher (Tara) Hopper of Johns Creek, Ga.; four sisters-in-law, Judy (Bob) Crowe of Finger, Yvonne Johnson of Henderson, Anita (Wes) Hawkins of Sacramento, Calif., and Esther Phillips of Houston, Texas; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother; her husband; and by in-laws, James (Ruth Ann) Wade.
