Why is so much taught on the subject of grief? Have you ever wondered or asked this question? What would your answer be? We live in a country that prides itself on the spirit of independence. We teach that each individual is unique with life experiences. Yet there is one aspect that is quite universal to all of us. Regardless of our differences, one commonality binds us all together. We will experience grief. “When all kinds of trials and temptations crowd into your lives, my brethren, do not resent them as intruders, but welcome them as friends! Realize they come to test your faith and to produce in you the quality of endurance. But let the process go on until that endurance is fully developed, and you will find you have become men (people) of mature character, men (people) of integrity with no weak spots.”
Why do we suffer? Why does sorrow come upon us? There are many possible reasons and not enough time to discuss here. What benefit can come from suffering? One is the opportunity to learn and grow as an individual. As the writer above states, they come to produce a quality of endurance. Struggles like every other event or situation in life may weaken our character or strengthen it, depending upon how we choose to respond. The writer above recommends we allow ourselves to develop endurance. This is accomplished by facing and working through the various trials, tribulations or sorrows that life places in our path. No, we do not allow outward circumstances to shape our mindset and long-term mood. In this way our life is happy even amidst sorrow.
