During his years at Chester County High School, 2022 CCHS graduate Carter Welch made an impact in CCHS sports which is why he earned the 2022 Chester County Independent Athletic Excellence Award.
The coaches of CCHS saw him deserving of this honor.
In the fall you would see him running to victories in cross country. In the winter you would see him sink a shot from the three-point line in basketball. Then, last but not least, you would see him serving his opponents on the tennis courts.
Family, coaches, teammates and friends gathered at the tennis court July 20 to celebrate this award. When he arrived at the courts, he had no idea he was receiving it. He expressed his gratitude.
“I’m just extremely blessed to receive this award. I’ve worked hard the past four years to help my team have the most success possible and it’s an honor to see that hard work pay off in this way. I want to thank all my coaches who have pushed me to be my best and help me develop into the best player/runner possible. I want to thank all my teammates too for pushing me to the limit every practice. I want to thank my family for supporting me in everything for so many years and the sacrifices they’ve made. But most importantly I want to thank God for blessing me with all these opportunities and allowing me to do what I love at a high level for the past four years,” he said.
His parents Becky and Damon Welch are very proud of him and thankful for the community molding him into the person he is.
“Whenever Carter participates in whatever sport he is playing at the time, whatever achievements or awards he receives, everything boils down to the coaches, family, friends, teammates and those teammates’ parents who have poured into him. We are so thankful for the Chester County community for helping to shape him into the young man he is today. We are forever thankful,” they said.
Welch’s tennis coaches Mike Showers and Debbie Hames said the following about his athletic ability and character.
“Carter Welch has been an active member of the Chester County Tennis Team for four years. Coach Showers states, Carter is a winner. His hard work and positive attitude is what has spurred us to the highest level the team has ever been. The team has remained undefeated since Welch became seeded. During Welch’s tennis career, he went to the state championships twice in a row, received the MVP award, and was the tennis captain for two years in a row. Welch received the ‘Dalton Hurst Award’ during his senior year, which is the most prestigious award for the Chester County Tennis Team. Coach Debbie states that Carter is the hardest working athlete that the tennis team has ever seen and that Carter often went straight from basketball practice to tennis practice. Carter has an unwavering determination to be better than he was the day before at every sport he plays. The tennis team is so proud of all of Carter’s hard work and leadership during his time on the Chester County Tennis Team.”
You can continue to follow Welch’s success at Freed-Hardeman University on their cross country team.
“We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Carter,” Becky and Damon said.
