First Farmers Coop hosted the 2020 Chester County 4-H Chick Chain Show and Auction on Thursday, October 22. The parking lot was filled with anxious 4-Hers, family members, and their 4-H chickens. A total of eight 4-Hers participated in three separate contests. The first two contest included the two breeds, black and red sex-linked. Followed by the very anticipated contest, the Cutest Chicken won by first time participant Brody Mast.
The last event of the evening was the 4-H Chick Chain Auction. Each 4-Her had the opportunity to sell three of their chickens. The first place winner in the red sex-linked breeds show was Alayna Williams. In the black sex-linked breeds show Aerial Faulkner took first place. First Farmers Coop had the winning bid of $120 for each set of first place winners. The Coop elected to have them sold again. Alyana’s three chicks sold for a total of $60 and Aerial’s 3 chicks sold for a total of $45. All the proceeds from the auction went directly to the 4-Hers.
This year’s show and auction was very successful for these students and their families. Huge thank you goes to First Farmers Coop in Henderson for hosting the event. They also provided free popcorn and drinks for everyone. Thanks go out to Mr. Neal Smith of Savannah, Regional Program Leader for UT Extension for judging our show this year. Mr. Neal has judged numerous livestock shows in the past and did an excellent job of explaining how and why he makes his decision to the crowd. We also want to thank Mrs. Sabra Schimdt from Morningside Farms in Milledgeville for judging our Cutest Chicken Contest. We could not have an auction without an auctioneer, for the fourth consecutive we are very grateful to have Mr. Chris Schimdt from Morningside Farms to do the honor.
Congrats go Brooklyn Butler, Canaan Burlison, Ariel Faulkner, Chloe Foster, Brody Mast, Kodie Weaver, Emily Weekley, and Alayna Williams who participated in the show and auction. All of these students did an excellent job with their chicken project. I would like to say a large thanks to all the parents/family members who helped these kids. A lot of time, work, and expenses are required to make this project successful.
