Last Thursday was the last volleyball game of the season, the last volleyball game for the Chester County Junior High Volleyball players and the last game of coaching volleyball for Wes Murphy.
After developing a love for volleyball during his 11 years of coaching it at the junior high, he was able to coach his young athletes to a victory over McNairy in the last game of the season. The final score of Murphy’s last game coaching was 2-0 with set scores of 25-22 and 25-17.
“I’ll just miss this sport Eleven years ago, I never thought I’d love this sport. I always liked it, but I never knew I’d grow to love this sport,” Murphy said. “I’m just going to miss being around the sport because it’s fun to teach.”
One of the reason’s he liked coaching volleyball is the fact that it is truly teaching the players the sport since junior high is the first chance kids can competitively play volleyball.
“There’s no pee wee volleyball league. There’s no dixie youth volleyball league. When they get to here, this is the first time they’ve ever hit a volleyball, so it’s true teaching from the ground up. It’s not like other sports where they’ve done it since they were five or six. They’ve never had a volleyball league to play,” he said. “I’ll miss the teaching of the fundamentals and basics of learning the game, because it’s the first time they’ve ever done it.”
In regards to his eighth graders moving up to the high school level of play next year, he is ready to see what they can do.
“It’s a great group. I look forward to seeing what they do in high school, and I’ll be there cheering them on.”
