Bessie King Harris will celebrate her 100th birthday Wednesday, May 27. Due to her fragile health and the COVID-19 epidemic, she will enjoy her birthday with immediate family only. She had looked forward to a party with family and friends but felt this was the appropriate decision.
Bessie has led a full life with her ultimate goal of raising a family and living a Christian life. She has succeeded at both. She married Leonard Harris Nov. 17, 1939 and raised three children: Patricia H. Siler, Roger Harris and Jeannine H. Cox.
Her husband is deceased along with her two children, Pat and Roger. She resides with her daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Joe Neal Cox in Henderson. She is cherished by seven grandchildren, Lesa H. McMinn, Lori Harris, Kim S. Royster, David Siler, Judi S. Newsome, Jamie Cox and Jason Cox (deceased); 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grands.
Bessie is one of only a few living from the Great Generation. She saw the effects of the 1918 Spanish Flu Pandemic, remembers the first airplane flying over the field she was working in and lived through the Great Depression. She graduated from Bolivar Central High School in 1939 and married later that year.
All in all, like many of her generation, she has been a survivor of life. She has been a spiritual inspiration to family, friends and the church family. Everyone that knows her has been blessed by their relationship with her.
If you would like to reach out to Bessie with a birthday card or a note of a fond memory, you may address it to her at 165 Ben Cove, Henderson, TN 38340.
Happy 100th Birthday!
