Chester County Independent Editor Kendall Patterson was awarded first place in the Best Sports Photograph category, Division One, at the 2022 Tennessee Press Awards Luncheon Friday in Nashville. The competition is co-sponsored by the University of Tennessee System, which has been a part of the annual event since 1940.
Patterson’s award winning photograph, pictured below, appeared in the March 25, 2021 edition of the Independent. Patterson also placed second in the Best News Photograph category, Division One, with a photo taken at Southern Oaks of a mother and daughter embracing after being separated for months due to the coronavirus pandemic. See page 2-A for photo.
“I’m proud of Kendall for receiving this award,” said Publisher Scott Whaley. “Being recognized by your peers is always satisfying. In addition to the many hats he wears at the Independent he is an outstanding photographer and we are fortunate to have him on our staff.”
Sixty-seven newspapers competed in five divisions and submitted a total of 1,130 entries. The entries were judged by members of the Hoosier State Press Association.
The Chester County Independent is a part of the Magic Valley Publishing Group.

The winning photo was of Chester County Eagles third baseman Kallen Emison tagging out a Lexington runner at third on an attempted steal during the ‘21 baseball season.
Patterson’s second place news photograph was a picture of Patsy Steed as she hugs her daughter, Susan Winn, after nearly a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic regulations regarding long-term care facilities.
