Chester County School board announces JUUL settlement

The Chester County Board of Education met in regular session Thursday, March 23, with all members in attendance.
The spotlight/celebration for the evening highlighted the Chester County Sports program, specifically CCHS Basketball’s recent exhibition at the state tournaments. Coach McPherson introduced players who were present for the meeting, senior Cordelius Gains, junior Chad Barham, Amaria Massengill, Hunt Pipkin, and sophomores Payton Barham and Aiden Welch. Superintendent Troy Kilzer and board members commended the players on their abilities and sportsmanship in representing Chester County.
In fulfillment of the agenda, the board unanimously approved new math textbook curriculum (including professional development for teachers), policy 1.106, 1.107 and 4.214 revisions, Esser reports, JUUL settlement, bank account administrators and tenure of eight staff members, including Brittany Bennett – CCHS, Jesica Emerson – CCHS, Caz Williams – CCHS, Laurian Williams – CCHS, Lindsey Anthony – CCMS, Jared Shumate – CCMS, Courtney Barber – CCJHS and Amy Maness – East Chester Elementary.
Policy revisions include TSBA advised revisions to policies 1.106 (Code of Ethics, concerning dealing with ethics complaints) and 1.107 (Board Member Conflict of Interests, separating and clarifying divisions), and innovative school program Policy 4.214, dropping “High” from “High School” to include middle school grades six through eight as well, to read “School Model program.”
The JUUL settlement total is $44,749.84 for Chester County, of which Chester County will receive approximately 70% after attorney fees, to be paid out over five payments, through Dec. 2023. Effectively, Chester County will receive $31,000 to use for counseling services for those struggling with vaping, alcohol and drugs.
The list of account administrators at Centennial Bank for food services account is revised to show Shane Connor Board Chairman and Supt. Kilzer.
In updates, Supt. Kilzer shared plans for upcoming training at Pigeon Forge concerning innovative school model planning, and preparing students for graduation. Capital projects informed the board of the hire of architect Douglas Short. They will begin meeting following Spring Break, to begin planning for construction of the Ag and Auto Shop.
The next meeting of the Chester County School board is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, April 20 at the CCBOE Office.
