New Friendship & Mifflin Community News

Hello to all from this little corner of the world. The sky was a dusty blue with grayish-white clouds on Sunday. The temperature was 25 degrees, and the “feel like” temperature was 17. The week ahead shows temperatures back into the 50s and a couple of 60s, and the 40s drop by to remind us it IS January. The lows are mostly in the 30s with a few 40s sprinkled in. After this past week of isolation for many of us, these temperatures are a welcome sight.
We had a LOT of snow this past week as we all know. Many were prepared, and others were not. Our birds have devoured the seeds we have supplied. They are going through a full feeder a day. We place our feeder hanging from the edge of our deck roof so we can enjoy watching them. Yes, it can make a mess, but they are worth it. I have been blessed to watch them puff their feathers out to stay warm and also to hear them singing. An unusual thing, we have seen yellow finches, a blue jay and a blue bird. These are usually spring birds. I have watched them fuss, and once saw what I thought was a mating dance, but it could have been two siblings for all I know – lol.
Schools have of course been out due to this weather. The snow packed to ice, and no one in the county could maneuver much in the mess, but the SNOW was pretty. This coming week, the rain will come and wash it all away. The utility bills for February will probably skyrocket. I do not know when I can remember subzero temperatures for so long. Our heating uses electric until below 32 and then switches to propane, which prepares my mind for a shock! I hope and pray the rest of the winter is normal. Also, I do not want to lose any landscaping this year. We were okay from last year but almost lost one of my strategic shrubs. All in all, I hope that you all weathered this winter week okay and that nothing serious took place. Many kids and kids alike enjoyed playing in the snow and eating snow cream. Pictures were made for memories, and now we look forward to February.
I am sorry I have missed a few issues, but I just turned 70 and could not seem to keep up with it all. Those holiday deadlines just could not find their way into everything else. This has been my first year that I missed three in a row. Our church was canceled Sunday morning, but Bro. Glenn did a sermon on Friendship Baptist Church on Facebook.
One thing to look forward to is that Daylight Saving Time begins March 10. YAY!
Condolences to all who have lost loved ones.
Happy belated birthday to Carolyn Whitley, 1-18; Brenda Hudson, 1-19; and Billy Neal Priddy, 1-20.
Happy birthday to Arlene Hill and Nicki Bray, 1-21; Kenneth Williams and Walter Willis, 1-23; James Ellis, 1-24; and Matt Dickey, Jr., 1-26.
Please continue to remember these in prayer – Carey Barham, Wesley Bates, Paula Berry, Marie Bishop, Melvin Butler, Jackie Chambers, Rickey Clayton, Jerry Cloud, Boyd Cupples, Vicki Dickson, Rachel Ellington, James Ellis, Joie Freeman, Joey Harris, Jennifer Gateley, Bro. “Time is not measured by the years that you live/But by the deeds that you do and the joy that you giv/And each day as it comes brings a chance to each one/To love to the fullest, leaving nothing undone/That would brighten the life or lighten the load/Of some weary traveler lost on Life’s Road/So what does it matter how long we may live/If as long as we live we unselfishly give.” -Helen Steiner Rice
I pray you all have a wonderful week and may it be filled with love, joy, peace and blessings. Remember: if you have news, please email me at mimmiepots@gmail.com. I would truly appreciate any news. People from here and those who have moved from our area but still want to keep in touch through the newspaper are hungry for news from home. Until next week, Happy Trails to You. Happy New Year to ALL!

Henderson Community News

Greetings to the People of Chester County everywhere. For this is a new week and new year, and I give thanks to the Lord for being with you in your home, at your job or wherever you find time to read the paper. It is just great to be part of your life. For this is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it! I hope you are enjoying the New Year. How was your week? I hope and pray it was a great one. If your week was not good for whatever reason, just remember you have the power to turn it around to make it better. Some of you wanted to know why I did not have my article in the paper. I just decided to take some time for myself and slow down from the hustle and bustle of life, and it felt great! My husband and I celebrated 48 years of marriage on Jan. 2. The following week, my family and I went on a cruise, and what a wonderful time we had! The food was phenomenal, and the weather was so nice; my husband and I sat out on the balcony and gazed on what a mighty God we serve! We played games. You already know we are a competitive family! Hate to say that my daughters did win; however, I did remind them I am 22-33 years older. I want you to know I gave them a run for their money! We had a wonderful time just being together as a family! It felt great not to stress, hurry up to meet deadlines or worry about anything! We took so many pictures and had so much FUN! When we returned back to the U.S.A. and reality, the first thing that greeted us was nine-degree weather, snow and cold wind, but I was glad to be on USA soil.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” My question is what are we doing with our family? Family time is so important! I ask you today to ask yourself, “What have I done for others or for my family?” If you can not think of anything that you have done for someone, it is time to get busy today.
Come one! Come all! The Martin Luther King, Jr. program is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Henderson City Hall. 121 Crook Ave, Henderson, TN 38340. This is not just a program for Black/African American people. This is a program for all people! I personally invite you to come and enjoy the program. So come out and help celebrate a great cause on Jan. 28. Hope to see you there, my friends!
The city of Henderson is offering our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Kellan Thomas Arnold. We are saddened to hear about the death this young man. I have known Kellan to be a sweet and loving person from a little boy to a young man. He was a hard worker and took care of his family. So please keep the family in your prayers. For we know the Lord does not make mistakes.
Happy belated birthday to DesShone Dniya Ingram, Jan. 9. Happy belated birthday to a very special man that lives here in Henderson. That man is John Cawthon. He will celebrate on Jan. 14. Happy birthday to a beautiful young lady; she is the daughter Sylvia Brown Flower, the wife of Calvin Barham and the mother of Carmen and Justin. Shonterria Barham celebrated her birthday on Jan. 6. We pray everyone will be blessed and have many more birthdays!
On our prayer list this week is our country, our children, our teachers, our family, the sick and shut in and especially our men and women that are serving our country.
To the people of Henderson, remember to patronize with our local businesses here in town; let us try to support our own as much as we can.
If you live in the City of Henderson and have news about your family, birthday, anniversary, announcements, and things happening in the City, please call 989-1907/608-132 and leave your message. Have a BLESSED week and a Happy New Year!

Montezuma Community News

Montezuma Community Center will have a potluck soup and sandwich meal and Planning Meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 5. All are encouraged to attend.
I pray that all of you are doing well after the great winter weather experience we just had. The snow was pretty, but I only wish it knew to fall on grass or dirt and not the roads. I know that many people that got out had some issues with driving and falling on the ice that was left behind. The warm up this week will make us think spring is already here, but just remember that we are not out of winter yet, so keep your guard up for more cold.
I apologize for missing last week’s deadline, but the holiday tripped me up.
Montezuma sends out congratulations to Bethany and John Cody Moore on the birth of their daughter, Bonnie Lynn Moore, born Jan. 12 weighing in at seven pounds, one ounce.
Montezuma sends out happy belated birthday wishes to Jimmy Dyer and Marie Mitchell on Jan. 19, John Clyde Moore and Billy Priddy on Jan. 20 and Becky Monks on Jan. 24. Happy belated anniversary to Jake and Autumn Brown on Jan. 23.
Happy birthday wishes to Ray Wells and Madison Cook on Jan. 29 and Margot Cox on Jan. 31.
We need more community involvement for our center and would like to invite people to join in. Annual renewal dues are $25 after your first initial year of joining. Membership dues need to be paid now to be considered an active member. We also take donations. Payments can be mailed to Edith Sills at 4475 Sunshine Rd, Henderson, TN 38340. We appreciate all our members and would like to have more events if we can get enough help to do so. Call Ann Moore at 608-2033 or myself if you have any new ideas for the center or wish to get involved. People who want to rent the community center should contact Betty Cooper at 879-9078 for booking. We ask those renting our facility to please follow our rules and show respect for the building. We try to keep it in the best order possible, and it takes everyone cooperating to make that happen. If you care about this community, please get involved in what is taking place to continue to grow our county and make it a better place to live and raise a family. Get to know what is changing in our local government, schools, churches and communities through the news, friends, your church, teachers, etc., and if it matters to you, there are ways to help make things better.
There is much spiritual warfare with society accepting things that go against who God is and what HIS laws are that we are to follow. Every day of life has its challenges, but if we look to God for the right path, it can be a good one. Please pray for our government, Mark Latham, Carolyn Goff, Jimmy Cooper, Bethany Moore, Jeff and Barbara Brewington, Melanie Pratt Hudson, Renee Jordan, Wesley Whitman, Imogene Naylor, Betty Cooper, Betty Sexton, Ruby Hannah, Vicki Dickson, Donnie Brooks, Linda Plunk, Wayne and Lynn Frye, Lee Trice, Patricia Ledford, Mike Tedford, Clint Murley, Sherry Fletcher, Chuck Beacham, Sandra Lott, Faye Crouse, Janice Morris, Lisa Bishop, Jeanette Walker, Paul Schilling, Nancy Crouse and others that are sick or healing. We especially want to remember the families of James “Jim” Clark Mitchell, Betty Lou Roaten, Bertie Loise Tidwell, Eugene McCage, Maxine Ridley, Danny Mays, Wanda Bryant and other families that have recently lost loved ones.
I am always looking for noteworthy news to share in this column. Please send to gaylescox1977@gmail.com or text me at 608-2857.
As always, I am wishing a very blessed week to all you readers. Until next time!

Sweetlips Community News

Hello from Sweetlips. Buur, buur! I have not been out of my house for a week. Hope everyone is safe and warm.
It is once again stew and bake sale time for us. The stew/bake sale will be Feb. 10 with a snow date of Feb. 17. We are asking for donations of beef roast and something for the bake sale. I will be calling later in the week to speak to folks in the community. For those that have never done this, your roast should be cooked, de-boned and left in its own juices – the more juice the better! Bring your roast and baked items to the community center Friday evening, Feb. 9. If the roast is already cool, please put it in the refrigerator; if not, leave it on the counter. If you have baked items that need to be refrigerated, please do so; all others will go on the long tables by the wall.
We will be peeling potatoes at 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9, so bring your sharpest knife and come help us. We have 150 to peel and cut! If you cannot peel, they will need help setting everything up downstairs.
This is our once a year fundraiser with all proceeds going to the upkeep and maintenance of the fire department and community center. The stew will be ready at 10:30. You must bring your own containers for stew, and the cost is $25 a gallon. If you bring your container early, make sure your name is clearly written on it. Baked goods should be in non-returnable pans as well as what the meat comes in. The stew sells quickly. You may pre-order by calling Neal Kinchen at 608-6461, JoAnn Greer at 879-9840, Cindy Springer at 989-2046 or Tatum Fucci at 879-0597. Usually, we sell out by noon, so please get the pre-orders early on.
Please remember to check in on the sick and shut ins. Some folks do not have anyone to check on them.
Hope you all have a blessed New Year and a great week. We hope to see you at the stew sale.
Happy Birthday to Gary Pickett, Jan. 10; Halie Mathis, Jan. 14; Bethany Brown, Jan. 14; Billy Pickett, Jan. 14; Frances Brooks, Jan. 14 (a milestone 90 years); Diane Bullman and Tammy Mathis, Jan. 15; Barbara Greenway, Jan. 16; and Jeff Pickett, Jan. 20.
Happy Anniversary to Keith and Aimee Price, Jan. 15; Jerry and Christie Newsome, Jan. 17; and Wendell and Donna Murphy, Jan. 22.
Thought of the week: It’s where your roots are the deepest that you grow the most.

Enville Community News

Hello from Enville! I hope you all are having a great week! Old Man Winter can feel free to leave anytime. I am sure ready for all the snow to melt away. The temperatures have been frigid, and I am not a fan of freezing weather. We have not had any water since last Thursday. I am hoping and praying that when we do get it we will not have any busted pipes since we could not leave the faucets dripping in these below zero temperatures. We are leaving the cabinet doors open but were also dripping before no water. Hoping it comes back on soon!
Lots of folks, young and old, enjoyed playing in the snow. We had eight inches here in Enville; all our kiddos sure did enjoy it. There were lots of great pictures on Facebook. Danny and I enjoyed staying in and eating snow cream. The kids have enjoyed their long break from school, but probably by the time you read this, they will be back in session.
Happy birthday wishes go to my sister, Jane Whitten on Jan. 27, Brenda Poupard on Jan. 29 and Zander Spain on Jan. 31. We hope you all enjoy your special day!
Please pray for the families of Zendia White and Annette Jordan and continue prayers for Lisa Bishop, Robert and Linda Johnson, Agnes and Robert Smith, Mary Lee Guyon, Danny Keen, Anita Needler, Vicki Dickson, Jean Pickett, Tera O’Neal, Harold and Janice Maness, Emily Freeman, Ashley Pugh, Ann Pugh, Shirley Hampton, Della Mixon, Loretta Plunk, Kaye Killingsworth, Sherry Webb, Justin Godsey, James Vinson, Jimmy Robertson, Rick Ooley, Mike Pugh, Mike Frank, Mike Finley, Tim and Tabitha Hampton, Lee Trice, Clint Murley, our firefighters, first responders, law enforcement, healthcare workers, military, schools and school board, our county and country, those who have lost loved ones and those who have lost homes to fire this week and, as always, each other.
If you have news or someone to add to the prayer list, call me at 608-3058, or if you want to rent the community center, call Pat Cates at 688-5125.
Have a blessed and safe week everyone!
