The FHU men’s basketball team (4-2, 2-0 MSC) ran past Lindsey Wilson (5-3, 0-2 MSC) with an 84-79 win in a close Mid-South Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon.
Both teams were scoring to open the game, and the lead was passed back and forth. The first part of the first half had a slower pace with a low scoring, with both teams having a hard time finding the bottom of the net. The second part of the half continued in the same manner, however, the Lions were able to outscore Lindsey Wilson and go to the break with a three-point lead.
The Lions struggled to score at the start of the second half, as Lindsey Wilson picked up the pace. With 16:32 on the clock, Mark Edmond made a layup to tie the game for the Blue Raiders. Freshman guard Geraldo Lane was quick to respond, making an and-1 play and a successful free-throw to regain the lead for the Lions.
It was a very close battle throughout the half. Lindsey Wilson tied the score again with 9:51 on the clock, but freshman forward Alex Rush made a three-point play to retake the lead. The Lions were able to bear down defensively late, while free throws pushed them over the top to earn the win.
Five players for FHU ended up in double-digits. Kortland Martin led the Lions with 21 points for the night, shooting perfect 9/9 from the free-throw line.
Lane had a career-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the field and five rebounds. Rush followed with 14 points on a 4-for-4 effort from the field and seven rebounds off the bench, while Hunter Scurlock added 11, and Zach Baugher finished with 10.
